The principals of more than 300 primary and secondary schools in Belgrade have been sued for conditioning students and staff to wear protective masks in schools.
According to Vesna Vojvodić Mitrović of the Serbian Teachers’ Union “Nezavisnost”, this is a quick reaction by the prosecutor to the lawsuit brought by the president of the police union against the principals of all schools in Belgrade.
The text of its author entitled “In the onslaught of the absurd” is transmitted in full:
The other day, in the middle of a class in which I tried to bring the ideas of Camille expressed in “The Myth of Sisyphus” to great graduates, intelligent and adult people, a student reminded me of that anecdote in which Sisyphus, when asked “What are you doing, Sisyphus?” “He replies in slang:” Here, I am pushing somehow … “These days, it seems, stronger than ever, education in the country of Serbia is facing big problems, but, pushing … Somehow way …
No, it is not that educators perceive their commitment as a Sisyphus work in terms of difficulty, quite the contrary! Many of us would never trade this for any other job, in which we have the opportunity to feel, experience, understand and shape the youth of a society throughout our working lives. However, it is something more: an intense feeling of helplessness, futility and meaninglessness in our efforts to preserve the autonomy of education in the face of the absurdity that overwhelms us almost every day …
The latest in a series of cases that paradigmatically portray the unbalanced attitude of the state apparatus towards the educational system is undoubtedly the rapid reaction of the prosecutor to the lawsuit brought by the president of the police union against the principals of all schools in Belgrade! “Let them do their job!” – You will say, thinking of both the directors and the prosecution, and we will easily agree on that. But, the subject of this lawsuit was formed precisely on the basis of absurdity: the principals of more than 300 (three hundred, you saw that right) primary and secondary schools in Belgrade were sued because they conditioned students and employees to wear protective masks in the schools! schools!
It’s wrong, but it’s okay, our people say, which in this case means that the Serbian Teachers’ Union “Nezavisnost” has always shown a critical spirit towards the actions of the directors and has often pointed out their omissions or illegal actions, but this time it should be clear. to say openly: in this fight, we are on the same side!
At this moment, when the whole world, not just Serbia, is facing the worst blow of the pandemic, is there anything more absurd and unnecessary than calling and questioning more than 300 directors who did not even prescribe epidemiological protection measures, but who were they forced to implement them together? with students and employees? And when thinking about how much wasted energy, time (especially the prosecutor’s office!), As well as budgetary funds to finance court proceedings, how many unnecessary exposures to the risk of infection, the only sure thing is: a headache!
And so… In an effort to resist the senseless demands of school programs, the administrative obligations that easily but surely overwhelm us, the virus that, as they said, lurks in all places, the absurd, sure, becomes a constant of our professional work.
More and more often I find myself answering the question of what am I doing: “Here, I am pushing … Somehow!”
