The landing of the first automatic station in modern Russia’s history on the moon is slated for mid-October 2021, according to a Roskosmos statement.
Previously, the head of the Nuclear Planetology Division of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Igor Mitrofanov, said at a meeting of the Space Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences that the launch of the Luna-25 station is scheduled for October 1, 2021.

– Depending on the launch date, we will choose one of the two flight options: for 4.5 or 5.5 days. Preparatory operations in the moon’s orbit are expected to take about five days, according to the statement.
“Therefore, the total time from launch to landing will take about 10 days,” the statement added.
The last Soviet interplanetary automatic station was “Luna24”, launched in 1976. Russia in its history has not yet sent a spacecraft to the moon.
Two areas near the south pole of Earth’s satellite were selected for the landing of Luna 25: the main and the reserve. The first is north of Boguslavski crater and the second southwest of Manzini crater.
For the mission to be successful, the Luna-25 must land in one of these areas within a range of 15 to 30 kilometers from the selected area. After landing, you will conduct scientific research on the properties and composition of the soil, measure its mechanical characteristics, and explore the moon’s polar exosphere.
Previously in the polar region, the spacecraft did not land. All Soviet and American missions, as well as aircraft from other countries, landed at moderate latitudes or at the equator.
