Lawyer Milica Švabić from the organization Klik aktiv – Center for the Development of Social Policies, which provides legal assistance to migrants and activists, told RFE / RL that on the afternoon of December 12, the police stopped a van in which they were traveling three activists.

“They called me on the phone and I tried to talk to the police and find out why they were detained.

They (the police) refused to talk to me. They said they would check the faces and the cars and they would check the pockets, the jackets, the bags of all of them, although those things are done only with a written court order, “said Švabić, who is also the legal representative of the NNK activists. .

As he explained, the police took the phone of one of the activists and arrested him for obstructing an official in the performance of his duties.

“According to other activists, the police were violent, even a boy from Italy was punched in the head, and a girl from Spain was verbally violent, that is, they yelled at her and threatened her,” said the NNK representative.

Švabić also explained that the activists were in action to distribute food packages and help the local population in Šid on December 12.

The detained NNK activist, Nemanja Shumanović, confirmed to RFE that he had been detained on charges of preventing an official from carrying out his duties.

He explained that he was released from custody tonight around 7.30pm.

According to him, all the activists cooperated and offered no resistance. They invoked their rights, which were explained to them by a lawyer they were talking to on the phone.

Shumanović described the atmosphere towards immigrants in Šid as bad.

“I don’t have many nice words, maybe I don’t have any. I’m from this city, the people are bad and it’s always been easier to point the finger at others, in this case at migrants,” said the NNK activist .

But Name Kitchen is an international humanitarian organization made up of volunteers from various countries. It is registered in Serbia as a non-governmental organization.

Since the beginning of the migration crisis, NNK has been helping migrants and refugees by preparing meals and providing the basic necessities of life such as clothing, sleeping bags and tents. Recently, this organization has also been helping the local population.

According to Milica Švabić, since the beginning of October, the Interior Ministry has sent solutions to eight activists with a request to leave the country within seven days.

The RFE sent an inquiry to the Serbian Ministry of the Interior, but no response was received until the news was published.
