Belgrade: it took ten years to build, a moment to collapse, and even two decades are not enough to rebuild the General Staff buildings.

In previous years, demolitions, hotel construction and renovations were announced, but the words did not translate into deeds.

After the visit of the envoy, the president of the United States, Richard Grenel, the fate of this complex could be more certain. He announced that the United States would like to participate in the renovation of these buildings.

Deputy Mayor Goran Vesić says that it somehow shows the symbolism of good relations between Serbia and the United States. “It shows that a new moment has come in our relations where we are respected, valued, that now they want to show with that gesture that Serbia is a true friend,” said Vesić.

There is still speculation about the new purpose after the renovation. The president of the United States, Donald Trump, when he was still just a businessman in that place, wanted his hotel, and similar ideas came from the United Arab Emirates.

“If there will be an administrative building like it was when the army was there, or there will be a hotel or something else, I think it is less important, because the Institute cares about preserving the appearance of the building,” Vesic said. He added that the purpose depends on what the state decides.

“The government will decide how the building will be used,” he said.

Almost everyone agrees that rebuilding is necessary, but opinions are divided on whether those who bombed it three times should rebuild it.
