Ivan Kontić (30) was confirmed in custody ordered by the Novi Sad High Court while in hiding in Montenegro from the Serbian judicial authorities, who accused him of attempting to kill Miljan Mandić on 24 August by brutal beating.
The court spokeswoman, Jelena Ostojin, specified to Tanjug that the judge in the preliminary proceedings decided to keep the previous decision on the arrest in force.
Kontic was questioned yesterday before a judge about the circumstances of his arrest and escape, to whom he said that he did not flee Serbia, but rather went to Montenegro before initiating any proceedings against him.
He was extradited from Montenegro on Tuesday on suspicion that he tried to assassinate Miljan Mandic by beating him in Novi Sad on August 24, according to the prosecution, so an investigation against him was not launched until September 12.
Kontic will be brought before the prosecution for questioning tomorrow in relation to the criminal act of attempted murder for which he is accused, before which he will be able to present in detail his defense, which he announced after his arrest in Podgorica.
He was extradited to Serbia from Montenegro on Tuesday, after being arrested on October 11 in Podgorica on a warrant from Serbia after a month in hiding. Subsequently, the Serbian Ministry of Justice sent an extradition request and agreed to be extradited.
Mandic was previously questioned as a victim at the prosecution.
Along with Kontić, the suspects in this case are OL and L. V, who are charged with the crimes of participating in a fight, that is, helping the perpetrator after the commission of the crime.
They were detained for a month and, in mid-October, they were released to defend themselves.
The Novi Sad police previously announced that Kontić was suspected of inflicting several blows on the 28-year-old man to the head and body, as a result of which he lost consciousness and subsequently broke “both forearms”.
The case attracted much public attention after a video was posted on social media on September 11, showing the young man being beaten.
Kontic is originally from Niksic, graduated from Law School in Serbia and worked as an apprentice in a legal office before the incident in which he struck Mandic, 28, on Jevrejska Street in Novi Sad on August 24.
