United States Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said there was “overwhelming evidence” that a coronavirus was made in a laboratory in the Chinese city of Wuhan.

“There is evidence that this is where it all started,” Pompeo told the BBC.

Pompeo noted that this is not the first time that the world has been exposed to the virus due to a leak in a Chinese laboratory, and recalled “a history of operating laboratories in China that are below standard,” AFP reported.

Although he criticized the way China handled the issue, Pompeo declined to say whether the virus was deliberately “released”.

United States President Donald Trump said this week that he has evidence that the virus comes from a Chinese laboratory.

“Yes, I have this evidence and I can confidently say that the virus originated from the Vuhan Institute of Virology,” said Trump.

Trump declined to go into detail saying he was not allowed to do so.
