The second phase of erecting a monument to Stefan Nemanja began today at Sava Square in Belgrade, the reconstruction of which is underway, and Deputy Mayor Goran Vesić says he is confident that it will be the only monument in the world by which Belgrade will be recognizable.

Vesić told reporters that the first of four trucks from the second phase arrived today, which will also arrive tomorrow.

“With these trucks came fragments of a Byzantine helmet, which will form part of the pedestal on which the monument to Stefan Nemanja will be placed,” Vesić said, adding that the last two trucks, with the statue of Stefan Nemanja, will reach Belgrade around September 15.

In the second phase, he explained, fragments of a Byzantine helmet will be placed around the scepter of the monument, and in its interior unique mosaics and reliefs will be made, representing parts of the life of Stefan Nemanja, that is, parts of the history of Serbia. .

“There will be about 50 people in the helmet at the same time, and that is why that helmet, that is, the pedestal that is unique in the world, will be a kind of open-air museum where people can learn what Stefan Nemanja did. and how important it was for Serbia. ” “Said Vesić, reports Tanjug.

He stated that Stefan Nemanja is the ancestor of our most important medieval dynasty, which ruled for almost 200 years and had 11 rulers, adding that during Nemanjić’s rule, Serbia became a major medieval European state.

“I am happy and proud that, at the suggestion of the Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, Serbia finally received a monument to Stefan Nemanja. The erection of that monument means that we finally respect our history, that we finally turn to ourselves and take pride in what we were, and that is why the meaning and symbolism of this monument is so much bigger and more important than what the monument itself is, “Vesić said.

He reiterated that the last two trucks with parts of the monument would arrive around September 15, after which the author of the monument, Russian sculptor Alexander Rukavishnikov, would arrive in Belgrade to supervise the installation of the sculpture.

He added that in mid-November, citizens will finally be able to see the fantastic monument to Stefan Nemanja around which there will be a fountain with 48 nozzles and which will have special lighting.

“I truly believe that we will all be proud of this square and of the monument, and I am sure that it will be the only monument in the world by which Belgrade will be recognizable,” said the deputy mayor.

The first four trucks with the first parts of the monument arrived from Russia in Belgrade on August 14, and since then the workers have been working under the supervision of Oleg Laskarev, who is leading the entire process.

“The process is progressing as planned, there are no delays and the works will be completed on time,” Laskarev said, adding that the mosaic pieces were handmade in Russia and delivered to Belgrade.
