One of the symptoms of covid 19 recognized by the medical community is hair loss. It usually occurs eight weeks after initial infection with this virus, and an association between more pronounced hair loss and fever has been shown in patients. Even people who have had a crown without symptoms can experience hair loss. In an interview with “Politika”, Dr. Goran Kuka Epstein, a plastic surgeon from Belgrade who deals with hair transplantation and the treatment of hair loss, points out that this is not the first time in the history of medicine that this problem appears after a viral infection, because it is known to have happened. en masse and after the Spanish flu of 1919, and also occurs individually after any infection that is accompanied by high fever. Another additional cause is the therapy the patients received, as the anticoagulant therapy and the steroids themselves lead to hair loss.
– The results of a study carried out in Spain are also very interesting, where a connection between androgens (male sex hormones) and an increased risk of kovida 19 has been shown, but also the fact that up to 80 percent of men hospitalized with a viral infection initially had some degree of hair loss. that is, androgenetic alopecia. Of course, all this information is new and we will learn more about the consequences of the covid infection in the coming years, explains Dr. Kuka Epstein, who works on the Miami-New York route and regularly comes to Serbia.
Hair loss is usually a chronic and continuous condition, if it is a hereditary androgenetic alopecia. In that case, the hair loss treatment lasts a lifetime. It always starts with a detailed diagnostic examination to determine the cause of hair loss and then moves closer to treatment. Some conditions, such as telogen effluvium or alopecia areata, have “triggers”, so it is necessary to detect and eliminate them before starting treatment.
– Patients appear more frequently when they already notice a thinning of their hair or when they notice that their hair falls out more than normal on a daily basis. Unfortunately, many patients waste precious time buying untested preparations that they find in the store or see in advertisements. It is very important to use proven therapies behind which there are adequate clinical studies as proof of their efficacy and safety. Today, we have a large number of therapies that are effective, but the therapy must be determined individually according to the clinical picture and the general condition of the patient – says our interlocutor whose works on this topic have been published in important professional journals.
He points out that only the hair of a person who has a problem with hair loss is never examined. The exam begins with a detailed anamnestic conversation, and already from the answers to the questions asked by the doctor, one can guess what the diagnosis would be. This is followed by a clinical examination of the hair and hair, then a microscopic examination of the scalp and dermis (dermoscopy), and possibly a biopsy of the scalp. There is also a list of lab tests that should be done. Sometimes an endocrinologist, internist, or rheumatologist is involved in treatment. And one of the methods that is being used more and more in the world is hair transplantation.
– In short, good candidates for hair transplantation are those who have controlled hair loss, a good “generous” region, and realistic expectations of the intervention itself. Hair transplantation has advanced enormously in the last ten years and we now have a technique called FUE, which allows us to use a special microsurgical device to directly extract a follicular unit (a group of one, two, three or more hairs) from the region. of origin and then we implant it in the recipient region, where the hair is missing. In this way, there is no visible scar in the place where we take the hair, the hair can be cut very short after the intervention, and the patients recover much easier and faster. I can wash my hair the next day. The results are completely natural and there is no difference between transplanted and “real” hair, which is, after all, the goal of any cosmetic intervention. We often perform eyebrow, mustache and beard transplants, and if someone does not have enough hair on their head, we can transplant body hair – says this famous doctor, who went to the United States from Serbia six and a half years ago. He lives there with his wife Jeffrey, also a plastic surgeon, and they have a two-year-old son and will soon have another baby.
And how did you come up with the idea of tackling this same field of medicine? He says it was completely accidental, if there is any coincidence. Like any specialist in plastic and reconstructive surgery, she had a plan to face cosmetic operations on the face and body, such as breast augmentation, abdominal tightening, liposuction … However, she focused on her hair due to the circumstances and found herself fully at.
– Hair is especially interesting and is the subject of a large number of investigations. Recently, for example, it has been discovered that hair has odor receptors, which has its own growth factors, which serves as the sixth sense. It is not an accidental saying “my hair grows on my head” because this phenomenon has its own physiological explanation and all this research shows that it is a small ecosystem in itself. New drugs are constantly appearing that are effective in certain types of alopecia. What I managed to do is do a combination of regenerative medicine and the application of my own fat tissue, stem cells and growth factors in the treatment of hair loss, and that is the subject of my constant research. I believe that this field of medicine, in which we can use our own tissues and cells in the treatment of other tissues, is the future of medicine and I am glad that I contributed to its development with my research work – says Dr. Kuka Epstin, who actively collaborates with the Miami School of Medicine. they started together.
The Women’s Center for Hair Loss, which she founded in the United States, is highly specialized and dedicated to women because this problem affects approximately 40 percent of women and requires a special diagnosis and often a psychological approach. The second center (Found Hair Training Program) is dedicated to a training program for doctors from all over the world who want to learn the technique of hair transplantation, as well as the methods of treating hair loss. So far, our interlocutor has trained more than 200 doctors who came from all continents to learn this surgical method. And that’s not all. Her mission is humanity, which is why she and her husband founded a humanitarian foundation that offers free surgeries to children and adults, as well as free treatment in the United States and Serbia.
An important role of nurses
Dr. Goran Kuka Epstein says that the work of doctors in the United States is much more practical than in our country. They mainly follow strict logarithms and protocols in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
– What I particularly like is the way the nurses and other medical staff were used in their work, and I would very much like that to change in Serbia. The nurse can, for example, do an ultrasound scan herself, anesthetize the patient, suture the patient’s wound during the operation … This greatly facilitates the doctor’s work and saves him time – adds our interlocutor.
She misses Serbia
This successful doctor comes to Serbia three times a year because she still maintains her medical practice in Belgrade. He says that he loves his hometown and the people who live there, that he has a fantastic team in Belgrade that he has been cooperating with for ten years, and he also wants our citizens to have access to global hair loss treatment. He also wants to educate our doctors so that hair transplantation and hair loss treatment in Serbia can be performed according to world standards.
