Politics Online – Six Palm Trees in Kalemegdan

Figs, bananas and olives have been growing successfully in our city for years, and since yesterday palm trees have also “moved” to our region. It seems unusual that this plant, which we usually see near the coast by the sea, “shows off” in Belgrade too, but experts say that due to climate change, that is also possible. JKP “Zelenilo Beograd” planted six palm trees in a green area in front of the “Cvijeta Zuzorić” pavilion in Kalemegdan. This is the first time that these exotic trees have been planted in Belgrade, in a public green area.

The seedlings are of very high quality, about three and a half meters high, of equal growth, and were imported from Spain.

Trachycarpus fortunei was planted in the park in front of the pavilion. The seedlings are of the highest quality, about three and a half meters high, of the same growth, and were imported from Spain. They are planted in two rows (three trees each) to emphasize the entrance to the Kalemegdan park and access to the pavilion.

– In recent years we have witnessed climate change, which is slowly changing from the continent and becoming more similar to the sub-Mediterranean. Winters in Belgrade have turned mild without extremely low temperatures. Therefore, the possibility of planting palm trees in the public green area for the first time has been opened up to us, which until now have not been characteristic of our climate. In private gardens, adult specimens of various exotic species, including godinama palms, have been successfully grown. The type of palm that was planted in Kalemegdan very well, without damage, withstands low temperatures of minus 15 degrees Celsius, they say in “Zelenilo”.

During the sowing, as they say in this company, all the necessary technological measures were applied. The soil has been carefully prepared, which will provide the seedlings with good conditions for their development. The substrate that is placed consists of a mixture of humus and gravel, in order to provide drainage. A drainage layer was also placed under the seedlings, and they were fixed and secured with so-called anchors.

During the winter months, the palm trees will protect themselves by connecting the canopy and protecting the trunk from low temperatures.

In the coming days, the “Zelenil” workers will plant photinia, lavender and seasonal flowers around the palm trees.
