The body of Serbian Patriarch Irinej will be on display tomorrow at the Cathedral of the Holy Archangel Michael in Belgrade, and then it will be transferred to the Church of Saint Sava in Vracar, where believers will have the opportunity to say goodbye to the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

The body of the patriarch, which will soon be sent from the kovid military hospital in Karaburma, will be exhibited to Archangel Michael during the liturgy.

The Holy Liturgy will be served on Sunday, November 22, 2020 at the Church of Saint Sava in Vracar, starting at 9 am.

In the continuation of the Holy Liturgy, a mass will be served and the body of the patriarch will be buried in the crypt of the temple of Saint Sava.

Patriarch Irinej is the first chief to be buried in this part of the Temple, which, even when it was conceived in 1895, was intended for the patriarchs. The Patriarchate says for “Blic” that the only thing that can influence the change of place is the will of the patriarch.

In today’s session, the Synod elected the administrator of the vacant archdiocese of Belgrade and Karlovac, who was led by Patriarch Irinej, and that task was entrusted to Bishop Jovan of Šumadija. Patriarchal duties will be performed by the Synod governed by Metropolitan Chrysostom of Dabro-Bosnia.

The part of the crypt where you will be buried: the ambulatory is the space behind the altar and is very rare in Orthodox churches. Only a few in the world of Orthodox churches have this space. The outpatient clinic in the Temple of St. Sava in Vracar was built on the model of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. There is a door through which you enter, and this space, in which the patriarch Irinej will be buried, but also the later Serbian patriarchs if they do not have special wills, surrounds the altar of the crypt.

Patriarch Irinej passed away today at the age of 90. The news of Patriarch Irinej’s death came after 15 days of a tough fight with the corona virus, which the patriarch lost because his health suddenly deteriorated overnight between Wednesday and Thursday.
