BELGRADE – The director of the Association of Serbian Tourism Agencies (YUTA), Aleksandar Senicic, said that due to the difficult situation in the tourism sector, a large number of agencies in Serbia will completely fail.
Out of 415 agencies, he estimated that around 70 will survive the crisis, with approximately 1,000 employees out of 4,000 total! Despite the crisis due to the pandemic, most agencies will not accept state aid offered in another minimum wage, because it only increases the company’s costs, and is conditioned by the prohibition on firing employees, according to the YUTA director.
“It is a short-term aid that does not solve anything until it is certain whether some of the deferred and owed taxes and contributions on salaries will be deferred again on January 4, 2021 or will be canceled, so that would be an additional cost, “Senicic said.
The Serbian government has decided to offer travel agencies, car rental agencies, guides, hoteliers and catering companies another minimum, as long as they do not lay off employees until January 31.
It should be remembered that the Association of Tourism Agencies of Serbia (UTAS) warned passengers that according to the existing contracts that agencies have with insurance companies, they cannot be compensated for trips not made.
UTAS states in a statement that insolvency policies do not cover damages if they are caused by a state of emergency and a pandemic, because this is established in the contracts of travel agencies and insurance companies, although the Rulebook that regulates This area explicitly states that the insurer cannot be exempt from liability.
– This means that passengers will be left without replacement trips and without money if insurance companies estimate that the bankruptcy of the agency is a consequence of the corona virus, and we all know that the travel agency business has been suspended almost entirely for months because of that – the statement said.
