This was declared before the Podgorica High Court by Ivan Kontić (30), detained in Montenegro on Sunday. Serbia issued an arrest warrant for him on suspicion that he brutally beat Miljan Mandić (28) in Novi Sad on 24 August and then broke both of his arms until he was rendered unconscious.
After hearing from Kontić, the court ordered a two-month extradition arrest. He is accused of attempted murder, for which he is threatened with a sentence of 5 to 15 years in prison.
Damir Lekić, Ivan Kontić’s lawyer, confirmed that his client was not clear that he was charged with attempted murder.
– He told me that he did not agree with the classification of the crime because he believes it was not an assassination attempt. Ivan told me that the injured party had no life-threatening injuries, but only a serious injury – said Lekić.
– He told me that he did not attack that young man out of obsession, but because he endangered his family. In that way, he said, he was just defending his loved ones. Rest assured that when my client tells his version of events, this whole case will starve in a very different way – added the lawyer.
– Ivan waited for the passions to calm down a bit, the situation was not easy. This is supported by the fact that you have now clearly stated in the audience that you want to go to Serbia as soon as possible, because you want to say what really happened. Ivan mentioned that if the extradition is not ordered, he will go to Novi Sad at the same time. By the way, it was not pleasant when he read such threats and insults on social media – said Lekić.
Let us remind you that the Montenegrin police arrested Kontić, who was hiding in a rented apartment in the Podgorica neighborhood of Zabjelo. It was released to the public when a horrific video of the beating came out. He also has a law degree and has worked as a head of security at a casino. In his youth, he was in the selection of the national judo team of Montenegro.
