We are already used to wearing a mask due to the corona virus, but the worrying thing now is that the “season” of air pollution has begun, so now the mask will protect us from smog.
Now, in front of us, there are two small enemies: a dangerous covid and the so-called invisible killer, PM 2.5 particles. Combined, they represent a fatal combination.
That the combined effect of air pollution and the coronavirus represents a serious danger to human health, was shown by research at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston in April this year, when our country was in the first months of the epidemic.
They also hinted that due to prolonged exposure to polluted air, the mortality of coronavirus patients increased, but recalled that polluted air shortens human life.
As they stated in research at the time, an increase of just one microgram per cubic meter of PM2.5 particles was found to affect the increase in coronavirus mortality by up to 15 percent.
So now, in addition to fighting the invisible virus, we will have to be on the lookout for particles that can be equally dangerous, and their presence is also difficult to notice.
This is another reason, which is more than enough, to wear a mask because they not only protect us from coronavirus, but also from air pollution.
The WHO also warned about contamination
Just as it warns of the encounter of the corona and seasonal flu, it is also important to monitor the period in which, in addition to the virus, air pollution also awaits us.
The World Health Organization warned in June this year that high levels of air pollution could be a risk factor in severe cases of coronavirus, and that it also increases the risk of death. Chronic patients are also noted to be especially at risk.
As previously indicated by this organization, countries with a high degree of air pollution should be more intensely prepared for the encounter of the corona and polluted air.
Additionally, a UN report recently came in stating that “global air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions are correlated with the global death rate of Kovid-19.”
– There is evidence that poor air quality is correlated with higher mortality rates than Kovid-19, it was stated in the UN report in July this year.
Serbia has cause for concern
The epidemiological situation in our country has been deteriorating in recent days, there has been an increase in the number of patients, and what is even more worrying now is that the air in Belgrade last night, for the first time this year after ” summer vacation, “was tainted.
Yesterday the situation was even worse, which is why Belgrade was ranked fifth, and then fourth in the list of the most polluted capitals of the world, and looking only at Europe, it was convincingly the most polluted capital.
What is even more worrisome is that the third wave of the epidemic is heating up, that is, we are already in it even earlier than the experts announced.
– I think at this time we must be vigilant, the third wave is underway. Do not expect it, but it has already begun, and with everything that is happening around us, we can see that the number of positive and sick people is growing, and unfortunately even of the dead. We also have an increase, which we predicted would occur in the first half of October, said Prof. Dr. Branislav Tiodorović.
Until a few days ago, our epidemiologists expected the third wave in late October, early November.
So the crown is catching up again, but now with the danger of being associated with air pollution.
Vulnerable groups may then feel the consequences for their health, especially through the worsening of existing diseases, but a larger group of people is unlikely to be affected.
Therefore, children and adults who are physically active, then people with heart and respiratory diseases such as asthma, should avoid staying outdoors for a long time. However, everyone else, especially children, should limit their longer stay outdoors. It is necessary to reduce activities that are accompanied by rapid and deep breathing, the key tips are.
