The kindergarten will be called “Reichenau East City Kindergarten Diana Budisavljevic”, and a special “spice” is that it is named after the Nazi doctor Burghard Breitner.
However, the problem is, as Vladimir Vlajić, president of the Serbian Orthodox Youth of Innsbruck and the first member of the Austrian Memorial Service in Serbia, says for “Novosti”, because the text of the appointment, which appeared in the official newspaper ” Innsbruck reports, “does not mention Diana saved Serbian children from death.
That is why the Serbian Orthodox Youth Board of Directors (SPOJI) officially addressed the Innsbruck Senate and the City Council for Culture.
– We believe that you have done a good job within the culture of remembrance, because it takes a dose of courage to change the name of a kindergarten, which until now bears the name of the Nazi doctor Breitner, in honor of the children’s savior from Innsbruck Diana Budisavljević (Girls Obekser), but at the same time leaving the street named after Breitner (with all the necessary signs pointing to her Nazi past and acts against humanity). This creates a successful confrontation with WWII history and paves the way for a successful culture of remembrance, the letter says.
CONTROVERSY AND AROUND THE MEMORIAL PLATE
The SAME debates that took place this spring on the naming of the kindergarten, on the occasion of the decision of the Innsbruck authorities to place a commemorative plaque in Diana’s birthplace, on Maria Teresa Street. The idea that he claims he saved 10,000 children without stating their Serbian origin sparked a reaction from Austrian Serbs, but also from our embassy in Austria, the International Committee of Mauthausen and Serbian historians. A new decision is expected.
They also welcome the correctly spelled name of Diana Budisavljević, which will be placed on the board at the entrance to the kindergarten, and the fact that “Budisavljević” will be hyphenated over the letter “ć”. However, they are saddened that the explanation for the appointment decision does not mention that it concerns tens of thousands of Serbian children saved.
– Most of us remember well the discussion on the text of the commemorative plaque projected in Diana Budisavljević’s birthplace, “Obekser-House” in the very center of the city, which is still in progress. At the end of May, we sent you a letter with contributions from experts on the topic “Diana Budisavljević Action” and the culture of memory. Longtime President of the Jasenovac Memorial Site, Dr. Natasa Matausic, Serbian historian Dr. Milan Koljanin, as well as the Museum of Genocide Victims in Belgrade, confirm that Diana primarily saved Serbian children, as well as two Croatian children. This is confirmed by experts in memory culture, as well as survivors, including Andreas Baumgartner, MA, Chairman of the International Mauthausen Committee, Dr. Wilhelm Kues, author of the first German book “Diana’s List”, Ms. Jelena Radojcic and Mr. Dusan Jerinic, who were saved by Diana – says in the letter.
They also claim that we should not ignore the fact that in the area of the Independent State of Croatia, with Hitler’s blessing and with the support of the Nazi state apparatus, of which many Austrians were part, there were death camps in which hundreds of thousands Serbs, Jews and Roma died in genocide. Diana was lucky to get approval to get Serbian children out of those fields.
– Imagine how, p. Eg Would our fellow Jews react if the institutions continually ignored the fact that the victims of the Holocaust were Jews? If the victims are not called by their real names, it turns out that the perpetrators of the crime win, because their goal was to erase the identity of the victims forever, the SPOJI Board members state in the letter.
