Serious threats from lawyer Svetislav Bojić to H1 TV journalist Jelena Zorić require a swift and efficient reaction from the prosecution, said the Independent Association of Journalists of Serbia, demanding that state authorities provide security for the endangered journalist. The Association of Journalists of Serbia (UNS) today requested that the disciplinary bodies of the Belgrade Bar Association react urgently to the threats.
The association recalls in a statement that the lawyer for Predrag Koluvija, the first defendant in the “Jovanjica” case, approached Jelena Zoric on December 28 after the hearing while she was on a reporter’s assignment, and transmitted the words from her client that she “destroys and disperses him by reporting” and said no. “Whoever sinned against Peđa did it right,” and the next day he told her, “Today Pea’s arrest was almost lifted, and Pe Pea greeted you very much.”
When evaluating that these messages “resemble those of movies about gangster clans” and that they are “more than a clear threat”, the Independent Association of Journalists of Serbia demands that state authorities guarantee the safety of the journalist in danger.
“We join the request of H1 Television, which will ask the bar associations, of which lawyer Bojić is a member, if their recent actions are in line with the ethical standards of that profession and will request that his legal license be temporarily suspended until the final decision of the competent bodies of the bar associations “. points to the NUNS.
With the full support of Jelena Zorić and the editorial office of H1, NUNS is convinced that it will continue to report on the “Jovanjica” case and other issues with courage and professionalism.
“We will inform international journalists’ associations about this case and we will do our best to keep the case public until it receives a judicial epilogue,” NNS said of the threat from N1 journalist Jelena Zorić.
UNS: The Bar Association must react urgently
The Association of Serbian Journalists (UNS) today requested that the disciplinary bodies of the Belgrade Bar Association react urgently to the threats that lawyer Svetislav Bojić sent to television journalist N1 Jelena Zorić on Monday and Tuesday.
“UNS hopes that the Bar Association will distance itself from these threats and examine whether Svetislav Bojić deserves to continue to have a license to practice law,” the press association said in a statement.
UNS welcomed the reaction of the police and prosecutors to the report sent to them by Jelena Zorić, and believes it is the result of the establishment of a new working group for the safety and protection of journalists within the Government of Serbia.
