NEW YEAR UNDER STRICT MEASURES? Dr. Kon announced that the existing measures will NOT be abolished during the holidays, but will there be closures? Here’s what crisis staff members say

As the most “crazy” night of the year approaches, the issue of introducing the curfew to avoid celebrations and gatherings that could be fatal due to the epidemiological situation in our country and the number of people infected by the coronavirus, which leads Long being four digits, it becomes more and more topical.

The situation with the corona virus in our country still does not allow the “luxury” to which we are accustomed when celebrating the New Year and Christmas holidays.

In the morning session of the Crisis Staff, it is convenient to expand the current measures, among which the hours of restaurants and service stores have been shortened during the working week, and their complete closure for the weekend. However, in the last few days, Crisis Staff members are apparently considering whether that will be enough, and new stricter measures are being mentioned during the holidays.

– When I hear those stories about the New Year, I don’t feel good. It is unrealistic for a group of people to rejoice, and you know that people and medical workers are separated from their families, there is a great burden on doctors, nurses and technicians. A New Year can pass without pompous celebrations and we would be closer to victory against the corona virus – said recently the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Health, Mirsad Đerlek.

While many wonder what kind of welcome we can expect in Serbia, Dr. Predrag Kon says that we certainly should not wait for the measures that are now in force to be abolished.

– There must be some restrictions to avoid a catastrophe after the holidays. It remains to be seen whether it will be a ban on meetings or limited operation of the facilities. Vacation is certainly a risky time and something needs to be done, Dr. Kon said recently.

He also added that a movement ban is being considered.

– They are published and invited through social networks to celebrations, parties in rented premises. It happens, it is something that is not an individual case, there are also open calls. The big question is whether it is possible to control it in the framework of private agreements and arrangements. That is one of the reasons why we are thinking of restricting the movement, which invades human rights and seeks legal frameworks – said Dr. Kon.

His colleague, Dr. Srdja Jankovic, a member of the Crisis Staff, said that despite the measures introduced, an improvement in the epidemiological situation is not expected until the New Year, so the celebration of the welcome would be justified.

– No one can be blamed a priori for taking over their business, but for me as a doctor, it is appropriate to celebrate the holidays with my family. I mean, under the same roof, people from the same household, not relatives – he said.

Dr. Darija Kisić Tepavčević recently spoke about it, emphasizing that we all know how we should behave and we must persevere in it. We cannot celebrate and celebrate as we used to celebrate and we should postpone it one more year, “so that this is the last that we celebrate so close.”

– The celebration of the New Year should be in the circle of families, with people with whom we are otherwise in contact, so that the source of joy for a few hours does not turn into something tragic, which can end fatally – he said.

How could it be welcome?

Instead of reservations and glamorous celebrations, it would be best to welcome the next year in the circle of the closest family, because each larger gathering represents a new danger that we do not need in addition to the already large number of infected people.

Professor Dr. Branislav Tiodorović, noting that “we do not need false populism,” said that if this continues, crisis personnel will have to think about introducing a state of emergency and curfew.

– It all depends on whether we show responsibility – said the epidemiologist.

Judging by everything, the New Year’s Eve we are used to is impossible, and whether there is a curfew depends exclusively on the epidemiological situation that is being monitored day by day.
