The new signage will go live on Sunday, when new zebras will be drawn, over which pedestrians will be able to cross the intersection diagonally and in a straight line, while vehicles stop at a red light from all four directions.
CONTRACT
In SEPTEMBER last year, the City signed a contract with “Siemens” worth 2.8 billion dinars for the introduction of an adaptive traffic management system. It is planned that the traffic lights will be replaced in 322 locations, out of the 650 in the city, and with the help of the most modern software the traffic light will be managed according to the needs, that is, the flow of traffic.
During the day yesterday, the workers turned on the light of the new traffic lights and the traffic police regulated the flow of vehicles so as not to generate crowds in this part of the city, since the existing traffic lights were off. As previously announced, the newly installed system will cycle for 120 seconds, meaning pedestrians will have 30 seconds to cross the street, while the rest are reserved for motorized traffic.
– With the new solution, vehicles will arrive at the Terazije tunnel from the Skadarska traffic lights, when they have a green light, in that wave – explained Goran Vesić, Deputy Mayor, during the presentation of the new pedestrian phase. – To achieve this, the right-hand traffic lane has been widened to turn into the Terazije tunnel on Dečanska street.
The works also included the abolition of the pedestrian crossings at the corner of Braće Jugovića and Boulevard despota Stefana, the pedestrian crossing near Skadarska Street was a traffic light and a protective fence was installed in this part of the city. Likewise, when the new regime of crossing the street comes into force, the authorities appeal to the public not to run the street at a red light at this crossing, but to wait for the green traffic light for pedestrians. Also, green for vehicles will light up alternately, while for pedestrians it will be red in all directions.
