The list of symptoms of kovida-19 in children currently includes only three items: high fever, persistent cough, and loss or changes in the sense of taste and smell.
Numerous studies have shown that the most common symptoms in adults are muscle pain, weakness, confusion, and chest pain. According to a study by “King’s College” in London, which is still pending revision, the main symptoms can be divided into six parts, one of which refers to digestive problems.
But now, scientists at Queen’s University in Belfast have confirmed that a nervous stomach is one of the main symptoms of kovid-19 in children.
“In our group, diarrhea and vomiting were a more accurate indicator than, say, cough and even changes in the sense of taste and smell,” said study author Dr. Tom Waterfield.
“If you really want to diagnose an infection in children, pay attention to diarrhea and vomiting, not just respiratory symptoms.”
Tom Waterfield also said that with the help of previously recognized symptoms of covid-19 infection, the infection can be accurately determined in 76 percent of symptomatic children’s cases, but when gastroenterological symptoms are added, the reliability of the diagnosis increases to 97 percent.
The study was carried out in the period from April 6 to July 3 and included more than 900 health workers from primary and secondary schools aged two to 15 years. None of them were admitted for hospital treatment due to kovida-19.
Blood samples were taken from the children included in the study to see if they had antibodies to the new corona virus and data was also collected to see if they had any symptoms.
The scientific team found that 68 children, 6.9 percent of the total, had antibodies against covid-19 and had contracted the disease. Only half of them had symptoms.
Some symptoms were common: 31 percent of the children had a fever, 18 percent had a headache, 19 percent had indigestion, diarrhea, vomiting, and cramps. In children who did not have antibodies, these symptoms occurred in 11, 4, and 3 percent of cases.
“It has become clear that we have a large gray area in which all those who have symptoms and do not yet have a positive PCR test are found. Recognizing the actual symptoms of kovida-19 will be very important during the fall when all the children return to school. We ask parents to pay attention to the symptoms and react in time so that other children do not become infected ‘
