It is not legal, it is dangerous and it is worrying that it can be easily obtained in Serbia and that our high school students use it frequently. It is not a drug and it is not a cigarette. It is ground tobacco that is packaged in miniature tea bags.
Some say it’s good for quitting, while others say it’s more dangerous than cigarettes, and since it’s easy to get, high school students use it more and more. From where in free sale in our country, the authorities do not have an answer to that question either.
A tobacco product with an unusual name can be bought in the tobacco shops in the center of Belgrade. The wet cut tobacco is packed in small bags. It is bought mainly by teenagers, write “RTS”.
The strangest thing is that this product does not have an official sales license and is not registered with us at all. No one even hides to sell it.
– The tobacco industry promoted it as something less harmful, less dangerous and a means to quit smoking, and none of that is true, because studies have shown the exact opposite – says Dr. Ika Pesic, member of the National Commission for Tobacco Control.
Life threatening consequences
The price of this product is between 900 and 1,000 dinars. According to comments on social networks, it is not even expensive. A much greater offer, but also the demand for this product is on the Internet, where it is possible to deliver it to your home. And the consequences it can cause can be life-threatening.
– After about three years of continuous use, it can cause oral cavity cancer, and after five years, it certainly causes cancer of the throat, pharynx, stomach, and pancreas. In addition, it is very dangerous for the cardiovascular system, because it has very high concentrations of nicotine – says Pesic.
– When it comes to addiction, it is the same, if not higher, than with other smoked tobacco products, because the nicotine concentration is much higher – adds Pesic.
So far, this product has not been registered with us and there was no request for such registration, is the response received by the RTS drafting from the Tobacco Administration, as well as the fact that they do not know importers of products that do not contain tobacco and they contain nicotine.
Where did this over-the-counter product come from, the authorities have no answer to that question either, writes RTS.
