At the beginning of the year, the Belgrade Airport company started the modernization and expansion works of the “Nikola Tesla” airport. Now they have come a long way and little by little a clearer picture is emerging of what everything will look like when finished.

Vance Airports plans the Belgrade airport to serve 15 million passengers a year until the concession expires in 2043, which explains the scale of investments and works at the airport in the Serbian capital. That is, the value of the first phase of the works is more than 12 billion dinars.
The B92.net team had the exclusive opportunity to get acquainted with the works at the largest airport in Serbia, with detailed explanations from Nikola Brus, Executive Director of Technology at Belgrade Airport.
According to him, most of the works will be completed in three years.
Work is currently underway to expand the terminal, build a new (inserted) runway, additional aircraft parking positions, a new aircraft de-icing pad, car parking and access roads, and work is in progress on a new holding area. of passengers. in the final stage.
Expansion of the passenger terminal

The widening of the finger C corridor is part of the first phase of the expansion and reconstruction project of the passenger terminal. Works began on March 4 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.
The first phase includes the expansion and reconstruction of the terminal with an area of about 27,000 square meters. Corridor C will have eight additional exits to board aircraft with airlifts, four exits to board passengers in remote parking positions, an additional rooftop corridor for incoming passengers and a waiting room to board and areas for departing passengers.
Therefore, the incoming and outgoing passenger traffic will be separated.
“The first part of the finger C corridor extension is 350 meters long, so the existing one is more than double,” says Bruce, adding that construction will continue after the end of this phase, at the end of September. 2021, with the addition of a 160-meter section with four exits. to board aircraft with gangways, the construction of which is scheduled for one year.
“The third level, the highest, will be a five meter wide gallery, like a corridor, completely made of glass,” says Bruce, adding that the goal is for the facade to be finished by the end of February 2021, along with the roof corridor. The building should be fully ready for use in September next year.
As he explains, from there, the escalators will lead to the common transfer area, from where passengers can continue to the mezzanine in case of transfer or continue down to the lowest level for luggage, where the trip ends.
The security inspection will also be centralized, and will be located in the central part of the terminal, thus eliminating the existing controls in front of each waiting room.
Expansion of aircraft platforms
Construction of platform E began on April 14 and covers an area of almost 25,000 square meters. This expansion will allow the acceptance of aircraft in three stops for aircraft with a wingspan of up to 36 meters (with C, the most common type of aircraft), which will significantly increase the capacity for simultaneous parking of aircraft.
“Platform E will be finished in winter, sometime in November,” says Bruce.
Track inserted
Other than regular maintenance, the existing main track has never been completely renovated. In order not to disturb traffic during the renovation of the main runway, a new inserted runway measuring 3,500 meters in length (longer than the existing 100 meters) is being built. In addition, new taxiing and maneuvering areas will be built.
The inserted runway will remain in use after the renovation of the existing runway or in an emergency and will contribute to the increase of the airport’s operational capabilities.
“Works on the inserted runway will take another two years, partly because the works have to be carried out in phases due to the continuous flow of traffic, while then the complete renovation of the existing main one will take a year,” says Bruce, explaining that a Once both are operational, airport capabilities, such as shifting traffic to the inserted runway in the event of some unforeseen events, as well as faster runway clearance after aircraft landing.
As he emphasizes, the inserted track was one of the state-prescribed concession conditions.
Parking for cars
A new modern parking lot was built on an area of 36,400 square meters in preparation for the future increase in traffic at the Belgrade airport.
“The parking lot is ready and ready to go, but we don’t need it at this time, due to reduced traffic due to the pandemic,” says Bruce.
The parking lot has more than a thousand and a half places, of which 809 for passengers, 330 for employees and 265 for rent a car.
“The taxi vehicles will wait here before they are invited to arrive at the terminal. We will install containers and everything they need for them,” says Bruce, noting that there will also be a car wash.
“There will be 120 places for taxis here, and in front of the terminal where there are now 10, there will be 35 places at the entry level in the future, as well as new places at the exit level,” he added.
According to him, all the works are finished and only the administrative procedures are pending.
As he points out, that parking lot, being the furthest away, will also be the cheapest, and visitors to the airport will drive buses to and from it.
Waiting room to access remote parking stalls
A waiting room with a total of 130 seats has been built on the ground floor of Terminal A. It has two direct exits to the apron and will be used for flights of aircraft parked in remote positions.
The waiting room is adapted to all categories of passengers (people with reduced mobility, parents with children, etc.) and the seats have charging ports for mobile devices and USB ports, while wireless internet will be available throughout the airport .
“The waiting rooms to access remote parking stalls will probably be ready in two weeks,” Nikola Brus told B92.net, adding that due to the drop in traffic caused by the pandemic, he probably won’t be using them for some time.
The interior is equipped and decorated in accordance with Vancy’s practice, so the airport in the Serbian capital will not differ from any of its facilities around the world. Namely, these are the colors, materials and interior signage system characteristic of all the airports managed by this company.
Waiting rooms to access remote parking stalls have their own elevators and stairs.
Reduce environmental impact
The next phases of the project include working on environmentally sustainable businesses and reducing the impact on the environment, which is why a new plant for the production of heat and electricity is being built, which will switch to more environmentally efficient energy sources (gas), as well as a solar plant for electricity. .
The airport also plans to acquire electric vehicles in the future, Nikola Bruce told us.
Remote parking has the possibility to charge electric cars.
In addition, solid waste separation and sewage treatment plants are being built, which have so far gone to the Sava untreated.
