The neurosurgeon of the Serbian Clinical Center, Dr. Andrija Savić, rejected offers that reached a monthly salary of $ 15,000 in order to make his acquired knowledge and experience available to new employers, he could choose the state, prestigious clinics and just say the number. But he rejected everything.
– It is true that I had offers from Germany, and the last one was very serious less than a year ago in Novi Sad, where agents from the main institutions of Saudi Arabia attended. They needed neurosurgeons because of what was happening in the Middle East. The offer was based on really big money. But I couldn’t accept it. I couldn’t, first of all, for myself, for my family, for my people who desperately need doctors, and for our state of Serbia. Life is not limited to material things and no money will fill me if we are empty inside, if we do not have that inner peace. My money was never in the first place, but my family, friends and my country – Savić said.
Our expert has so far performed thousands of very complex surgeries on the open brain, spine, and peripheral nervous system. On 6 October, for the first time in the history of Serbian surgery, a document arrived from the European Association of Neurosurgeons, giving Savić a high recognition for the “nerve transfer” operation.
It is a special method that allows people with disabilities to restart parts of the body removed.
– That is a part of my doctoral thesis that I presented at the European Congress of Neurosurgeons. With minimal technological support, but with the help of skills and knowledge. The procedure is performed when the spinal nerves are removed from the spinal cord, where we managed to unite the damaged nerves, and thanks to which many managed to caress the children’s hair with lost fists or shake the hand of a friend. We are unique in that in the world and there is a great possibility of Serbian surgery – says Savić.
He emphasizes that the recognition not only belongs to him but also to the State and to all his colleagues and teachers.
– I must mention those great surgeons and my professors like Dr. Lukas Rasulić, Dr. Miroslav Samardžić, Dr. Dana Grujičić, Dr. Miloje Joksimović, Dr. Toplica Milojević and Dr. Vladimir Baščarević. These are people who selflessly shared knowledge with their colleagues and I will be forever grateful, Savić said.
Dr. Andrija Savić is originally from the town of Dobrača near Arilje. He graduated from college in Belgrade and then volunteered for six years until he got a job and finished his specialization.
