Kiwi gave birth well in Milisavljević’s yard in Knjaževac. Five years ago, a seedling was planted and now it covers the entire yard. In ten days, when the harvest begins, there will be about 150 kilograms of that fruit.
Numerous kiwis in Najdan Milisavljević’s yard attract the attention of everyone who passes his house these days. Although it is a fruit species from warmer regions, Najdan says that kiwi tolerates our conditions well and that it is not difficult to grow.
– It is not sprayed, it requires a lot of water to be watered during the summer, because as soon as it lacks a little water, it dries up. It requires a lot of water, so it cannot be planted on a hill where there is no water. Perhaps, for example, right there by the river, explains Najdan Milisavljević from Knjaževac.
Five female plants and one male that serve as pollinators form a small community of kiwis in the yard. The fruits ripen slowly in October, they are still hard and will be ready for harvest in just ten days.
– It needs a month after harvest to ripen, rest, and at the end of November and in December it can already be used for eating – says Ružica Milisavljević.
Najdan produces kiwi seedlings by grafting, so part of his garden is reserved for a small nursery.
Using the kiwi fruits from their small garden plantation, the Milisavljević make sweets and juices, while distributing the surplus to family and friends.
