LOZNICA – In the last quarter of a century, when December came, it became known that Zoran Tomić Toma of Loznica wore a red suit, put a white beard on his face, a red hat on his head and moved from door to door to bring gifts.
At that time of year, he became Santa Claus, the world’s most popular grandfather, and entertained the little ones in the Loznica area, but still going to Mali Zvornik, Krupanj and even crossing the Drina river to neighboring Republika Srpska . This year, he did not do so because of the crown, which also hampered his plans and wishes.
– I look forward to the arrival of December each year, the New Year, the meeting with the children, their happy faces when they see that Santa Claus has come to them. I was hoping the condition would improve, the crown would give way, but we know that is not the case. My heart wanted, but I still decided to stay home. The phone rings, people call, they ask me when I come, they feel a little disappointed when they hear that I will not go to see them, but the vast majority understand and kindly accept my explanation.
On average, I visit about a hundred families in December, there is a great risk that I will inadvertently bring the virus to someone, not only will I ruin their New Years holidays, but someone could get seriously ill. You can’t come to the house without saying goodbye to the children, putting them on your lap, taking pictures with them. Again, where is Santa going with a surgical mask on his face? – says Tomić, who will not share packages with his godfather Goran Petrović, who has been driving it all these years.
In previous years, he attended organized distributions of packages in many companies, schools, institutions, participated in humanitarian actions, but this is not the case. The Crown ruined everything, introduced some new rules of conduct even for the New Year. Tomic remembers that he wore a Santa suit even when he had no time, once in the middle of summer over 30 and something like that, because the boy wanted to surprise his girlfriend and give her a birthday present. Due to the snow and the thick negative, he reached God behind his back, to the most distant houses, during electricity restrictions, he carried gifts in high-rise buildings, as if he came from Lapland to babies, on birthdays, adults, he carried gifts of various sizes.
– It is important that all this happens, that normal life returns, so we will get together again. I heard that there are some that appear as Santa Claus, but my word is like that. Health is the most important thing, especially for the little ones. There will be more New Years, presents and cheer, and Santa can show up even when it’s not December, right? – says Tomić, who will remember the end of 2020, the first year in which, after two and a half decades, he did not wear a white beard and a red suit, when Santa Claus was on vacation.
