Then he asked his father for money for the “Coca-Cola” that he loved very much, and the unfortunate one, without even imagining that he would send his son straight to death instead of to the store, gave the boy money. Now, 23 years later, the death of little Dušan Jovanović (13) remains an unhealed wound from which Serbia will suffer for a long time.
On that day in 1997, Dusan, a 13-year-old Roma boy, died as a result of a brutal beating at the hands of two teenagers on Belgrade street in the center of the capital.
On the way to the store, the boys were intercepted by teenagers, who later turned out to be “skinheads.” The killers, then seventeen years old, first asked him for money, and then they started beating and shooting him …
They threw him to the ground and the blows followed one after another, kicking the unfortunate boy in the body and head with metal-reinforced boots, until he stopped showing signs of life. And he kept money for his favorite juice all the time.
Little Dušan died of a broken neck, and two days later he was buried in a white coffin in the presence of hundreds of people who came from various places to say goodbye to the unfortunate child for the last time.
Dušan’s father Aleksandar Jovanović later told the media that, seeing that he did not return home for a long time, he went after his son.
– I found him lying on the steps, head tilted back. Then I yelled, “Who killed my son?” The neighbors went out and I didn’t know what to do. I ran to my neighbor, told her to call the police, and then my wife came out. I told her: “They killed our son”, and she started screaming – Dušan’s father said in 1997, describing that hellish night, without even imagining that a few years later, almost his entire family would disappear.
Tragedies followed one after another
The unfortunate fate of the Jovanović family did not stop with the child’s death. Dušan’s mother could not live without her son, and according to Dušan’s sister, who was born three years after his death, she attempted suicide several times.
– She never tried to kill herself while I was home. Even when I was born, everyone said that I had become a completely different person. However, she could never accept that her son no longer existed. A week before she took her own life, we noticed that she was depressed. And one day when I got home, I was the first to find her – Kristina Jovanović told “Blic” before.
On July 12, 2015, Dušan’s mother also died.
– Dulet’s birthday was August 1. For all those 18 years, she talked about how she wanted to be with her son on his birthday. And so he waited and waited. And in those last years, he could no longer. She wanted to be with him. She was also buried next to Dušan.
She didn’t get a chance to meet her brother
– They didn’t give me a chance to meet him. Although I will never know what he really was like, through history I created a clear image of him. Dule was sociable, he loved animals, watches. He was a huge basketball and soccer fan, and he also liked to go fishing, Kristina said at the time.
At that time, a 15-year-old girl, living a life too difficult for a teenager, grew up with the memory of her little brother, whom she never met.
– And on that last day of his life, he did everything he loved. He went fishing, played basketball, spent time with Mom and Dad. My mother told me that he was a big fan of watches, but also of that Coca-Cola, that he wanted to buy that night, but he couldn’t …
In addition to all the misfortunes that befell him, he also had to take care of his sick father, because Alexander had both legs amputated due to a serious illness.
Three years after his wife, Aleksandar also passed away, and young Kristina was left alone to struggle with a cruel life and immense sadness.
“I would like a documentary about Dulet to be made, so that his tragic death will never be forgotten,” Kristina Jovanović concluded at the time.
The murderers were arrested and convicted
After kicking a child to death in metal-reinforced boots, the monsters hiding from extremist ideology fled in the direction of the old train station at the foot of Nemanjina Street. Since the police had a detailed description, they were arrested within hours of the crime.
Milan Čujić and Istvan Fendrik de Zemun were each sentenced to 10 years in prison and sent to serve their sentences at the Valjevo Juvenile Correctional Center. After spending four years in prison, Fendrik arranged for NIN to tell what happened that day.
– I was sure the whole world was mine. At that time, I did not even think about the fact that a person is entitled to his own ideas, ideology, as long as he does not endanger others. That period of my life, which was preoccupied with so much enthusiasm, leaves a mark. Indelible. It’s pretty hard to get over all of that completely, but I’m trying to get over it. I honestly wish I didn’t have any percentage of my old self in that sense – said Fendrik for NIN.
Dusan is no more, and his assassins have long been free.
