“We support the fight for the rights of LGBTI + people in Serbia, which, among other things, is reflected in the passage of the law on same-sex unions.” We believe that this is part of the fight for a better society based on equal human rights as the heritage of civilization, in which none of its members will be stigmatized and discriminated against, ”the petition reads.

It is added that the law on same-sex unions is only the first step to exercise the right of LGBTI + people to have their most basic needs recognized and legally regulated.

“The law must allow these people to have the same right to love and be loved, to build a life together with a loved one, to inherit property from their partners, and to enjoy all the rights and responsibilities that straight people enjoy without question. “By passing such a law, LGBTI + people will not obtain any special or other rights, but the right to live a life that is common to most members of society,” the petition reads. .

It is evaluated that the academic and professional community should be the driving force and support positive changes in society that improve society.

“Achieving equal human rights for all is part of that path. It is important to emphasize that the adoption of such a law will not endanger or undermine the rights of heterosexual people,” says the text of the petition.

It is added that the signatories understand that part of society welcomes the struggle of the LGBTI + community with negative emotions and a feeling of threat.

“Such emotional reactions are an indicator of a lack of understanding of what LGBTI + communities really are and what their needs are.” However, this cannot be a valid argument against the adoption of this law, but rather an indicator in which direction educational and anti-discrimination activities and practices should be developed and implemented, “the petition reads.

It is added that the law of same-sex communities will create a space in which the life and enjoyment of the basic rights of the LGBTI + community can be facilitated, but it is affirmed that “the fight does not stop there.”

“The application of the law through the constant work of the institutions and the change of the social climate is a much more demanding and lasting work. Through our social, scientific and educational practice and our professional role, we will continue to support the values of tolerance and equality of all marginalized groups and we will always be ready to oppose discrimination, regardless of whether it comes from individuals, groups or institutions “, said the signatories.

At the beginning of last week, a group of 212 public figures issued a public appeal against the adoption of the law on same-sex unions.

Subsequently, the Ministry of Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue invited the signatories of “Appeal 212” to a dialogue on the text of the law on unions between persons of the same sex.

The Ministry stated in a statement that it expects a response from the signatories to the appeal as soon as possible and looks forward to a joint improvement of dialogue and human rights culture and engagement in Serbia.
