Nikola’s only son, Željko, was killed in a tavern fight in 1987. Rade Grdinić is a suspect in the murder, with whom his younger brother Rajko was at the cafe. In January 1989, Nikola killed Rajko on the street, but also a young man who was in Rajko’s company at the fatal moment.
Nikola was sentenced to 20 years in prison for double murder. He was nine years old and since 1993 has shared a cell with a Cetinje neighbor, actor Žarko Laušević, who was also convicted of double murder.
– It had to happen to me. I had to do it. There was no forgiveness. He only waited a moment, but it wasn’t easy to kill either. I’ve been looking for a killer for days. I chased him around Belgrade, Croatia, Italy, “says Nikola.

In one of the confessions he gave for Nedeljnik, Kaludjerovic recalled that winter of 1989.
– As for me – Nikola says harshly, abruptly and forcefully, as if measuring each word several times, “I could never pass and walk down that street, go to my son’s grave, if I had not avenged him.” an underrated man, man – shouts Kaludjerovic.
– I’ve been waiting for you everywhere. Everywhere, man. I’m wandering, I’m searching, someone tells me … Well, the same again. I met him several times in company. He was with a girl once. I went to her father and told him to keep her away from him so he wouldn’t accidentally kill her by mistake. I hear myself. I followed the executioner to Split. Everywhere, everywhere. In the end, I happen to meet the killer’s younger brother, Rajko Grdinić, who also participated in the fight in which my son died, one night in Sveti Stefan, near the “Orion” cafe.
It was delivered on January 21, 1989. He is in the company of someone. They approach the car. I yell at him, “Cold, Cold” … that’s what they called it. At that moment, he ran to the front of the car. I fired a rifle and then probably wounded an innocent young man, Sofranc, who was with Grdinic. I took another step, two, and started firing again, but my rifle jammed. I took a few steps back, lowered my rifle to the ground to remove the casing.
Grdinic got up quickly and ran to me. I quickly grabbed the rifle in the widest space, while he grabbed it in the narrowest. We drag for it. When we were face to face, he screamed: fuck, you’re done. I do not regret my life. I saw pure death before my eyes, but he was a young man in his twenties – says Nikola excitedly and continues – he made five or six very strong jerks. Thousands of thoughts, thousands of images went through my head.
Suddenly I did a sharp, sudden jerk back and forth and hit him in the chest with a rifle. He fell to his knees. I did another jerk, ripped the rifle off, and hit him with it. One hand was on the asphalt, the other was holding my pants. I ran back five or six steps. I felt more secure. Then he got up and walked over to me. Then I shot. Then I killed him ”, concludes the story of Kaludjerovic, who was also convicted of the death of another guy, whom he wounded that night, and who died in hospital a month later.
Nikola thought about it, said: “I’m sorry I killed that Sofranc, innocent, but nothing in the world.”
If he had not taken revenge, he would have committed suicide, says Kaludjerovic.
– There was no happier man in Montenegro than me the night I avenged my son, I tell you sincerely. It will be easier for you to go anywhere than to Cetinje to be in debt to someone for blood. Here, it has always been counted as a debt, Nikola is clear.
When asked if he would have committed the murder if he had had other children besides Željko or if he had surrendered out of fear for their lives, Nikola immediately replied:
– Of course I would kill, because there is no blood revenge on blood revenge. If they kill my son and I kill the murderer, that’s the end … A life for another life. But sometimes the situation is unclear and the fear still exists, Kaludjerovic said in one of his last interviews.
