In an author’s text for the weekly NIN, the Dusseldorf bishop of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Grigorije, said he believed that the autocracy in the Balkans was “in the terminal phase.”

He stated that in Montenegro it was seen that even “the most prepared autocrats would come down from power one day”, because politicians appeared who advocated a civil state that would protect all nations from anarchy.

Monsignor Grigorije, who is in favor of the separation of the State and the Church, but with mutual dialogue, respect and understanding, wrote that he was convinced that the Church had contributed to the democratization of society and that it was not possible to go back centuries previous.

“True democracy is possible only if we are willing to listen to each other, and only those who are allowed to achieve dictatorship, nepotism, corruption and crime are not ready for dialogue,” Grigorije wrote.

He assessed that “the inability to speak and listen to the other side is the most visible consequence of totalitarianism, whose representatives seem to have an inexplicable nostalgia for Goli Otok, camps and bonfires as the most successful methods of silence.”
