This is what the Pancevo boys, the heroes who pulled a 15-year-old girl Minja D. out of the blaze in a fire in which the 10th floor apartment on Visokog Stevana street in Dorcol in Belgrade was completely destroyed on Tuesday, for “Novosti”. Pavle Gavura (36), Lazar Eres (30), David Nika (30), Nemanja Držaić (20) and Nenad Janković (19) impressed Serbia with their bravery and humanity. But these noble people of Pancevo not only saved the girl on Tuesday, they did not stop with their humanity: they called those who can help raise funds for the reconstruction of the apartment destroyed in the fire.
– Everyone who can, we invite you to help, to fix the girl’s apartment so that she has a place to return to when she leaves the hospital – they appealed in a video posted on “Instagram”.
With their feat, they restored the faith of the people that there are still great and brave people among us. And they think they are not and they don’t want to say much about their bravery. They say that now they just want Minja to make a successful recovery and that she will never forget everything that happened on Tuesday.

– He listened to everything I said, he picked himself up in those moments – Pavle Gavura told us, a boy who risked his life while accepting a girl on the terrace of the ninth floor, holding on, “in the air”, only by a rope. – In the evening, his father Aleksandar called me. She thanked me, told me about her daughter’s health after she was transferred to the clinic and we agreed to meet when all this was over. I am a hero? Well, that’s the least important … My family is proud of me.
The day after the fire, the five people of Pancevo seemed to be becoming aware of the feat they had accomplished. Apart from the heroism they confirmed, modesty especially adorns them. As we spoke, they only pointed out that the most important thing is that the girl is alive. At no time did they mention the danger to which they themselves were exposed.
SKIN TRANSPLANT IS NEEDED
The injured girl is being treated at the Clinic for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery on Zvečanska Street in Belgrade. According to the doctors at this institution, he is still in serious condition and it is almost certain that he will need a skin transplant.
– The burns are deep and affect about 47% of the skin – says, for “Novosti”, Dr. Ljiljana Jovanović, surgeon of this clinic. – It is important that you are now in a stable hemodynamic state and we are planning the first operation. Our estimates are that several interventions will be needed to repair the injuries as much as possible. (IK)
– I am immensely happy that the girl survived and that all my colleagues are well. When we went up to the ninth floor and out on the terrace, everything seemed scary, but we had to suppress our fear – says, for “Novosti”, Lazar Eresh, one of the heroes of the drama in Dorcol. – She had burns all over her body, so much so that we couldn’t accept her and hug her without hurting her even more. Smoke was coming out of his mouth … He couldn’t catch his breath. Until the arrival of the ambulance, the neighbors came to the rescue, they brought wet towels in which we wrapped her, to alleviate her suffering at least a little.
The young Nemanja Držaić, with a lot of pain in her voice, tells us how the image of a teenager who says that everything hurts and begs them to help her remains etched in her memory for the rest of her life.
In front of the lonely one in which the fire broke out, on Wednesday, pieces of the facade and shutters could be seen falling due to the high temperature. The smell of soot and smoke was also felt on the ground floor, and the image on the 10th floor was terrifying. The walls of the common hall are black, the apartment where the fire occurred was completely destroyed and everything burned. The upstairs apartment was also damaged.
Neighbors say the girl lived with her mother and grandfather, and that they recently moved into this high-rise building.
– We did not know the family, we only saw them in passing. From what we know, there were tenants in this apartment. The zeal that the young people fought to reach the girl and save her is amazing. They are true heroes, a neighbor from the flat told us.
The concerned friends of the injured girl were also in front of the loner. They told us that she was a good friend and that now they were praying for her to recover.

MARJANOVIC: WE WILL HELP
THE PRESIDENT of the Municipality of Stari graduated, Radoslav Marjanović, visited the building where the fire broke out on Tuesday night and, as he told us, this Municipality of Belgrade is ready to help the family and the tenants of this building.
– Experts went to the field to determine the situation. The roof is damaged and we will help as much as the jurisdiction allows – Marjanović told us. – We are all sincerely moved by the feat of the boys who saved the girl, that is why the leaders of the municipality will receive them on Thursday and give them thank you notes.
