PROKUPLJE – Milan Cvetković from Prokuplje decided to serve a 10-day prison sentence, because he did not want to pay 10,000 dinars, the amount of the fine imposed by the Misdemeanor Court for not wearing a seat belt in a car.

Cvetković says he decided to take this step to get out of the revolt because, as he claims, he is not guilty.

– When you know that you have been wrongly convicted, you fight to prove your innocence – says Cvetković.

This man from Prokuplje says his nightmare started in February after he underwent surgery for an umbilical hernia.

– I was discharged from the hospital earlier and, as I needed medicines, masks and gloves, I went to Nis. In Merošina, the traffic police stopped me and asked why I was not fastening my seat belt. I explained to them that I could not tie myself with a cut in the stomach, I lifted my sweatshirt and showed them the wound and the sutures and explained that the belt could hurt me more, as well as that the doctor told me not to tie me – says Cvetković and He adds that he called the doctor at the scene to explain the situation to the police.

– They listened to everything, they told me that they had to write a sentence, but that I had to bring a confirmation from the doctor and that the report would be canceled. When I arrived the next day with a confirmation, they just unhooked me – adds our interlocutor.

As he himself says, since he did not pay the fine, and the Merošina Misdemeanor Court confirmed that he had to pay, he appealed to the Niš court.

– The appeal procedure was recently completed. Since the deadline for paying the fine has passed, I have to go to jail. If I were guilty, if I had not buckled up on a whim, I would have paid, but I am not guilty – he concludes.
