Marija Matić: When you lose your leg at 16, people can’t look at you

Marija Matic is only a few thousand euros away from a much better life: her leg was amputated and now the action is underway to get this girl an electronic prosthesis, which ex-footballer Milos Vukovic managed to get for 12,750 euros, while it costs around of 40,000.

Maria was only 16 years old when she learned of the doctor’s decision to amputate her leg, because she had osteosarcoma, a malignant bone tumor. Maria survived all this horror seven years ago, in February 2013. But she didn’t break her, she made her stronger.

Behind this brave girl there is a dark period, which she managed to overcome as a true champion. She was treated for the fatal disease for a year and a half, during that period she survived the amputation of her leg, and after that therapy, and only after finishing them did she go to rehabilitation. When he learned to walk with a prosthesis, he returned to a normal life: he finished high school and enrolled in college.

“Honestly, then everything was very shocking for me and for my family. I was young and I saw no other way out than to fight and progress more, to come out of that battle as a winner. My mother was with me while receiving therapies, while I I was in the hospital, she was with me in rehab. She was with me, my strength. Of course, I also have a younger sister with whom my dad was at home, and they all gave me the maximum support, encouraged me. I continued, for them I had to continue. It was shocking, but realistically, anything is possible whenever you want. ” says Marija for Nova.rs.

Going back to everyday life was not easy, because Marija is from Kosjerić, a small area where everyone knows everyone.

“I live in a small town, where it might be someone else with false teeth. No one has known that before, generally people don’t know how to behave when they see me, they can’t look at you, they are so confused. But I’m always smiling. And positive, so they can relax by my side. I have no problem with that, I accepted it, and then it will be easier for them, “says Marija.

His colleagues, who organized a humanitarian party, were also very supportive. And now an action is underway that would really make Maria’s life much easier. He explained all the possibilities that would be opened to him with a new and modern help.

“Now I wear a mechanical prosthesis, which is the simplest and simplest that can be obtained in Serbia through social networks. All those better things have to be paid for, and unfortunately it is too much money. Money can only be collected in this way , with an action like the one we started. Milos and I. An electronic prosthesis would provide me with all the best: a much better gait, better stability. I move a lot and that would not put as much burden on me as I do, my gait would be more pleasant, better. Walking with a new prosthesis would look good. Like walking with a healthy leg, it has that flow, it’s not like mechanics. That prosthesis literally follows you, your healthy leg, it’s literally a normal walk. It would definitely be important to me because I’m young. I work, so I get tired quickly with the current prosthesis, which frustrates me, ”says Marija.

The sad reality is that only through the goodwill of the people can Marija live a better life, because the state is of no use.

“The prosthesis that I currently have is from the Republic Health Insurance Fund; all prostheses go through them. I also have yours, but there is no other option; if you want something better, something better, you will have to pay. Unfortunately, that is the reality here in Serbia. “In European countries it is not like that at all. Young people there do not get this type of prosthesis, but of much better quality, while here they pay a few thousand euros for it. Very sad, but true ”, says the girl.

As she conquers new obstacles and looks forward to a better tomorrow, Maria admits that she draws strength from an incredible source: herself.

“I don’t know if it’s stupid to say it, but I gave myself the greatest strength. I put myself first, that I will fight for it, that I will survive, that I will continue. That really strengthened me, it opened me up. “Look, I matured before my time, because I lived that part of my life that way. I decided it first of all, and that was it, ”he says.

It also reveals that half of the required amount has already been raised, as well as that it is quite close to the goal. It also points out that this action may be a motive for other people who are in a similar situation.

“People have responded to a great extent, I am very satisfied, everyone is very supportive and I am very happy. I am also happy for people who are in similar problems, to be able to show them that they should not be ashamed of anything and that everything can be done. They just have to fight for themselves, “says Marija Matić.
