World Premature Baby Day, November 17, will be marked in a special way this year. UNICEF in Serbia is launching a large humanitarian campaign under the slogan “Too small to be in the heart” calling on all citizens and businesses to support the modernization of neonatal intensive care units in Nis, Kragujevac, Belgrade and Novi Sad.
Around 15 million babies are born prematurely in the world each year. More than 4,000 tiny creatures are born in Serbia, of which up to 60% require some form of intensive care and treatment. This means that in our country, every day, 7 babies cannot continue their life without specific care and support.
The fact that premature birth in Serbia is the leading cause of death for children under 5 years of age should also be taken into account.
The campaign was also supported by UNICEF Ambassador Ana Ivanovic, who visited the neonatal intensive care unit in Belgrade last year.
“I am very happy to see how many children can survive if we provide them with the best conditions for that. I ask everyone to get involved in the UNICEF campaign and help all they can, so that all babies in Serbia have a chance to survive and develop their full potential. “
Funds raised during the UNICEF campaign will be used to equip and modernize neonatal intensive care in Nis, Kragujevac, Belgrade and Novi Sad, to launch programs and improve services to support the development of premature babies, and to support the establishment of the first Center of Resources for Early Childhood Development in Serbia. . That is, premature infants need support even after leaving the hospital, because they are at increased risk for developmental delays and learning difficulties.
Therefore, engaging and working with families to facilitate early recognition of developmental delays and timely intervention are of utmost importance for the health and future of the child, especially for children born prematurely.
The campaign lasts from today, November 16, until January 7, 2021. During this period, citizens and businesses can donate through the website.
UNICEF’s program to support premature babies is part of a cooperative program with the Ministry of Health.
