Today, Finance Minister Siniša Mali signed a loan contract for the Nis-Merdare motorway construction project with the EBRD Regional Director for the Western Balkans Žužana Hargitai for the first section from Niš to Plocnik.

“Today we signed two important agreements. They are one step closer to the completion of the construction of the peace highway from Nis to Merdare and Pristina. One refers to the implementation, the other to the completion of the entire financing structure of the project. The total value of the project is 225 million euros, “he said. “We expect to start the works in the middle of next year,” Mali added.

“The project is part of the Washington agreement, and the construction of the highway will contribute to regional development. On the other hand, this project fits into the Serbia 2025 plan,” said the finance minister.

“I want to thank the EBRD. With today’s agreement, we have contributed the remaining 85 million, we have contributed 100 million euros from the European Investment Bank and the remaining 40.6 million with a donation from the European Union,” Mali said.

The total value of the project is 225 million euros, Mali said.

“In 2021, we will have a record budget for capital investments: more than 330 billion dinars, or 5.5 percent of our GDP. No more money is spent on capital investments. In the last five years, we have built more than 350 kilometers of new roads, and “Next year we will start building another. I want to thank everyone who participated in the preparation of these documents, “said the Minister of Finance.

The second contract for the implementation of the project was signed by the Minister of Construction Tomislav Momirović, the Director of the Serbian Corridor, Aleksandar Antić and Žužana Hargitai of the EBRD.

Momirovic said construction is expected to begin at the start of the next construction season. The stretch will have six tunnels and 16 bridges and viaducts, he said. The tender will be announced at the end of the year, Momirovic said.

“The first tender will be announced in December,” said Zuzana Hargitai.

Part of the so-called Highway of Peace through Serbia, Nis-Merdare, will be 77 kilometers long. Corridor 10 and the new highway will connect near Nis and allow Serbia access to Albanian ports on the Adriatic Sea and better connect 500,000 people. The length of the future Nis – Durres highway is 383 kilometers.
