Today, Patriarch Irinej will be buried in the crypt of the Temple of Saint Sava. The temple was open all night, so that the believers could say goodbye and pay tribute to the late head of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC).

The patriarch passed away on Friday at the age of 90. The news of Patriarch Irinej’s death came after 15 days of a tough fight against the corona virus, which the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church lost after his health condition deteriorated dramatically.

Today, the head of the delegation of the Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, attends the funeral of Serbian Patriarch Irinej in the temple of St. Sava. He is also chairman of the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Church of the Moscow Patriarchate.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić arrived at the Temple of Saint Sava, where he will attend and speak at the funeral of Patriarch Irinej. In addition, he was accompanied by the Serbian member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mirlorad Dodik.

The two are also speakers at the funeral of the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

The delegation from the Metropolitanate de Montenegro-Primorje and the Diocese of Budva-Niksic is also present at the funeral of the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Today’s funeral liturgy will be attended by the Bishop of Dioclea and Archpriest-Stafrophore Gojko Perović, the record holder of the Cetinje seminary, the Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral and the Diocese of Budva-Nikšić announced.

The Holy Liturgy began at nine in the Temple. It takes place in the central part of the temple, where the body of Patriarch Irinej is exhibited, and is attended by Metropolitan Chrysostom of Dabro-Bosnia, the current bishops and 16 priests.

As announced, Bishop Irinej of Bačka will speak during Patriarch Irinej’s funeral. As planned, citizens in a procession with an appropriate distance will be able to pass through the scaffold and show honor and respect to the late Patriarch Irinej.

Video beams have been placed in front of the temple, so that citizens can participate in the liturgy in that way.

At Patriarch Irinej’s funeral, Metropolitan Chrysostom, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, Serbian member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Milorad Dodik and Father Petar Lukić, an elder of Belgrade Cathedral, will speak.

The metropolitan of Zagreb and Ljubljana, Porfirije, appealed to all believers, who will go to the Temple of Saint Sava to say goodbye to Patriarch Irinej, to comply with all epidemiological measures and professional advice due to the pandemic of the coronary virus.

8.00 – The coffin with the body of the patriarch lying on the bed

The procession with the earthly remains of Patriarch Irinej arrived yesterday at the Temple of Saint Sava around 12:30 pm, after which the Serbian army guards brought the coffin and placed it on a bed decorated with flowers in the center of the Temple. .

He will stay there until the funeral.

Serbian Patriarch Irinej has been at the helm of the Serbian Orthodox Church for the past ten years, and January 2020 marked 60 years of monastic experience, 45 years of episcopal and ten years of patriarchal experience.

One of the most important monuments, which he left for life, is a large number of renovated and built temples and monasteries throughout the diocese of Nis, where he served for 34 years. It was the first time in 120 years that Serbian shrines had been restored and built in the area.
