10.57 – Sermon on Amphilochius

In his sermon on the funeral of Metropolitan Amfilohije, Bishop Irinej Bački presented an interesting fact that Saint Peter of Cetinje, Peter II Petrović Njegoš, and Metropolitan Amfilohije died in three days.

Saint Peter of Cetinje, he said, died on October 30, Pedro II Petrovic Njegos that day, November 1, and Metropolitan Amfilohije passed away the day before Saint Peter of Cetinje’s death.

He explained that on the day of the death of Saint Peter of Cetinje, his body was exhibited in the Cetinje Monastery, and he will be buried on the day that Petar Drugi Petrović Njegoš died.

In ecclesiastical circles, it is interpreted that, just as the Greeks have the feast of Saint Trier, the death of the metropolitan and Montenegro obtained its three holy hierarchs.

In his sermon, Bishop Irinej of Bačka said that today is sad and happy, sad because, he said, we parted company with Bishop Amfiohije, who all his life tried to celebrate Christ, the glory of God and his holy church in various places.

And we rejoice, he said, because we know that all separation is temporary and we hope one day to find ourselves together in the arms of Heavenly Father.

MONTENEGRO SAYS GOODBYE TO THE RENOVATOR OF ITS SOUL

Thousands of people received yesterday in Podgorica the coffin with the late Metropolitan of Montenegro and the Littoral, Amfilohije, in Podgorica. They greeted him on their knees, while the bishops carried his remains in their arms for almost two kilometers.

Shortly after 2 in the afternoon all the bells of the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ sounded. At that moment, an endless mass of the world stirred. From the depths, a procession glided past the people, who, like corncobs in the wind, fell to their knees. The young nuns walked slowly in front of the procession, then a child “emerged” with a cross on which was written: Amfilohije Radović. Date of birth and year of death.

The cross was accompanied by children with flowers, again monks and priests in ceremonial uniforms. The coffin with the metropolitan was discovered, and all those who were close could see it, and those closest to it laid flowers on the bed.

As the procession climbed the steps of the temple, a howl erupted. Dragutin Zivaljevic screamed.

– Lele, carrvek!

This habitual moan for the deceased, the tradition of the Moracans, where their metropolitan and ours come from, broke even the hardest of hearts. The nuns hugged in front of the church entrance and sobbed.

A line of people that stretched across the width of the plateau in front of the temple and stretched out into the depths of the city, began to form around noon, despite the blazing sun. Despite the days when his time is not right. But, apparently, only the sun wanted to warm this one.

The singing began.

– I was a friend and frequent interlocutor of the Metropolitan – Hadzi Bogoljub Boban Velimirovic, poet, almost whispers. – I did not expect us to part so quickly, but as if I had a hunch, I wrote a dedication in verse: Troparion to the restorer Bishop Monfilohije. It really renewed our soul and our church. And this temple, in which, I know, he wanted to rest, is in a way his endowment. When I only remember how well people followed him in this non-construction. And in many monasteries where the lights were turned off long ago, he lit the homes of faith. He restored both the sanctuaries and us.

Before the last trip of the Metropolitan to Podgorica, he spent the night in the monastery of Cetinje, which he loved and in which he dined, as heir to the throne of Saint Peter of Cetinje. The vigil and parade lasted all night and did not stop until his farewell to this ancient temple. Never before, to this day, for the people and the clergy, have there been so many young people and so many children in the Cetinje Monastery. Entire families came to pay their respects and honor. And they sent it from the capital city under the command of Lovćen. He spoke and wrote a lot about Cetinje and Lovćen. People remember him even for his songs.

– Only he knew the original “Barley of Desires” – we heard the story in the procession. – And he only ended it with the message: “Let the army return to Kosovo.”

Here a service was also served to the Metropolitan Amfilohije. It was cared for by Bishop Joanikije, Bishop of Budva-Niksic, who was entrusted by the Holy Synod of Bishops as administrator of the Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Litoral, with the assistance of bishops Theodosius, Dionysus, Demetrius, and the retired bishop Athanasius.

– I visited the metropolitan in the hospital. He asked me to confess. But I confessed to him. And we say goodbye – Bishop Atanasija said in a short sermon on the scaffold. – I was ready for this trip. On the path of Christ, who traveled, serving and sacrificing himself for the people.

Bishop Atanasija reminded them of their friendship from childhood, and later their joint monasticism, as he said, “for the sake of our open minds and hearts.” In his sermon, he especially recalled that thanks to his perseverance and the way he approached the people, many monasteries were renovated not only in the Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Litoral, but also in the Diocese of Slavonia and Pakrac.

– Blessed be the path of the Petrovic saints and the martyrs, from Kosovo to Lovcen and the entire universe – Bishop Atanasija hardly spoke, shaken.

The parade and farewell of Metropolitan Amfilohije at the Cetinje Monastery lasted until the last minute and his farewell to the eternal resting place. In the procession, Zdravko Krivokapić, the president for the composition of the new Government of Montenegro, awaited his turn to pay tribute to the Metropolitan. Hundreds of people came to the monastery the day before yesterday and yesterday morning to say goodbye to their beloved bishop. Some in traditional folk costumes, girls with bouquets of roses.

A huge banner, brought by young people from their hometown of Donja Morača, stood out along the monastery wall. This is the first banner with which he began the biblical liturgies that he led for months. In which he persevered and persevered, but left a vow to the people: the return of the Njegoš chapel to Lovćen.

– This banner on which it is written: “Grandfather, our metropolitan, our strength”, is a winning message, but also a warning not to abandon the path that we have been traveling for months – say the young people.

Few did not stop in front of this banner.

Metropolitan Amfilohije will be buried today at 2:00 p.m., in the crypt of the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, at his request. This is how the circle is closed: the builder has returned to his work in eternity.
