The Holy Liturgy and the funeral of Patriarch Irinej will take place on Sunday, November 22, 2020.
The Holy Liturgy will be served on Sunday November 22 at the Church of Saint Sava in Vracar, starting at 9 am. In the continuation of the Holy Liturgy, a mass will be served and the body of the patriarch will be buried in the crypt of the temple of St. Sava, it was announced on the portal of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
The body of Serbian Patriarch Irinej will be exhibited at the Cathedral of the Holy Archangel Michael in Belgrade during the Holy Liturgy on the feast day of the Cathedral, November 21, 2020, and will then be moved to the Church of Saint Sava in Vracar, where the believers will have the opportunity to say goodbye to the blessed Patriarch. .
As announced by the Serbian Orthodox Church, on the occasion of the repose of the blessed Serbian Patriarch Irinej, the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church held a session on November 20, 2020 at the Serbian Patriarchate in Belgrade and took the decisions provided by the Constitution of the Serbian Orthodox Church in such situations.
Today, the Government of Serbia has taken the decision to declare three days of mourning in Serbia on the occasion of the death of Patriarch Irinej.
The decision was made that the Holy Synod of Bishops will assume patriarchal duties in accordance with Article 62 of the Constitution of the Serbian Orthodox Church, and that the Holy Synod will be presided over by Metropolitan Chrysostom of Dabro-Bosnia until the election of a new Serbian Patriarch.
The Holy Synod of Bishops elected His Eminence Bishop Jovan of Šumadija as administrator of the vacant archbishopric of Belgrade and Karlovac in accordance with article 70 of the Constitution of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
The Constitution of the Serbian Orthodox Church stipulates that a Serbian patriarch can be anyone who has been a “diocesan bishop for at least five years”, and the procedure requires that three candidates be chosen by secret ballot by Parliament, whose equal members are all metropolitans and bishops of Serbia and the world.
