Epidemiologist Predrag Kon told Dan live on H1 that the situation with regard to the coronavirus is critical, “even in some places catastrophic,” due to the accommodation of patients. He points out that “the measures were certainly late”, because since November 6 the medical part of the Crisis Staff has proposed more restrictive measures, but that on the other hand there is a serious argument regarding the economic aspect of the measures. When asked when the consequences of not respecting epidemiological measures will be seen during the patriarch’s funeral, Kon said it will start in about seven days.

“Catastrophic means you have practically nowhere to put people in this situation … It is also catastrophic that the number of dead and registered patients is constantly increasing. Belgrade stands out a bit. It is too early to talk about safe leveling, but until someone the flattening has come, ”said Kon on Dan live.

When asked if it was too late with the measures, as the United States thinks against Kovid, he notes that “it was certainly late, I say.”

“Since November 6, the medical part of the Crisis Staff has proposed more restrictive measures. On the other hand, there is a serious argument in the economic aspect … When some measures are not accepted by all the Crisis Staff, it is simply like that, everyone takes their part. responsibilities, ”says Con.

“It is clear that the situation was not sufficiently understood. The story about the control of the measures adopted began in July. The first thing was that it would be implemented, so it was said that it was inapplicable, so the law had to be changed. ..”, he adds.

He says that in today’s session of the Crisis Staff, the decision was only made regarding schools and kindergartens, and that there was no talk of closing service activities, which is why the medical part of the staff is also highlighted.

“We ask for the closure, not at 6 pm, but at 5 pm, with a much more massive closure,” says Kon.

When asked about his conversation with the political side of the crisis staff, he says that he insists on understanding the seriousness of the situation.

“But it should be understood that the arguments in favor of that are also very strong arguments, they are related to the economic aspect. There are a lot of people who should be completely excluded from business opportunities,” says Kon.

When asked why there are no more press conferences after the crisis staff sessions, he says it is not a question for him, “I just don’t know how to answer you”, emphasizing that all medical staff members are very engaged during the epidemic.

For a week, there has been no day-to-day increase in Belgrade, but the number remains at a high level, which is very difficult and catastrophic: out of 2,000 people, about 300 are hospitalized, he notes. Newly infected people stay at one, Kon says, adding that it’s a slowdown. He fears that the death toll will rise. In Vojvodina and mainly in the central part of Serbia, the situation is reversed, he added.

Asked about Patriarch Irinej’s funeral and failure to comply with the measures, Kon said that he had previously stated that it was epidemiologically unacceptable. As an individual I am just a member of the Crisis Staff, I have no position to influence anything, I influence the session itself and through communication with colleagues and I have no other way of influencing, I don’t know if you mean some I can influence the system in some way, except in Crisis Staff meetings, where certain measures are proposed, he said. I am not representative of any group that decides on anything, I am part of the advisory group, the medical part of the Crisis Staff and the expectations are too high, and I have my share of responsibility, and I can not do more than that, says Kon.

When asked when the consequences of non-compliance with epidemiological measures will be seen during the funeral, Kon said they will start to show in about seven days. “I sincerely hope that it was seen in the broadcast, and I do not know how massive it was, if it was what we saw … It is clear that there was some effort, attempts and official direction of the Serbian Orthodox Church not to enter without a mask, yes what was done is not being done, so there was an official direction, “he said, adding that there was a breach of the measures and that there will be consequences and that there are already some.

When asked how many health care workers got sick, he said he heard a little less than 2,000, but that total number of health care workers, and about 1,500 health workers. It is very overloaded and very difficult, it is a great blow, he said, noting that doctors give more than they can.

The measures will be successful, the truth is that it does not go so fast, it will take some time, he said, adding: “We all hope that December will be something easier and something better.” Capacities will be seriously expanded with this hospital (in Batajnica), but we must not be fooled because the number of health workers will not increase with that hospital and the burnout of health workers will continue, stressed the host of H1.

He noted as an extremely serious situation that there will be indirect deaths due to the Kovid epidemic.

If necessary, he says, there will be new measures that involve more closures, but he also says there are the first indicators that the infection is slowing down in Belgrade, so he hopes that the existing measures will pay off.
