The newly elected president of the United States, Joseph Biden, was invited to Belgrade in 2016.
Then, as Vice President of the United States, after a series of official meetings, he walked through Skadarlija in Belgrade. That moment was remembered by the public. Biden visited traditional Serbian craft stalls and chatted with those gathered, but these days the most talked about is his dance with actress Ljiljana Jaksic.
Ljiljana herself confirmed how honored she was to dance a few steps with the new president of the United States.
– I am very happy to have danced with Bjaden. I am glad when I dance with any Skadarlija guest, and especially with a high official – says the actress at the beginning of the conversation.
Biden was especially intrigued, as Ljiljana puts it, by her story about the bohemian neighborhood, which she introduced to him in English:
– I was very interested in hearing Skadarlija’s story. I told him that famous writers, actors and officials from all over the world sat on this street, that people sat there from morning to morning, that they spent unforgettable days and nights in Skadarlija, that everyone was welcome and that it was customary to sing. . and danced. And then I did exactly that: I sang and asked him to the dance. He said goodbye with a smile and immediately danced! He did not hesitate at all and danced in the middle of the street!
As he says, they danced two stanzas to the song “Kraj jezera” by Zvonko Bogdan. That was enough for Ljiljana to realize that he was a good dancer.
– Biden has a nice attitude and dances very well. There was no trampling – says the actress with a laugh and adds that that moment really stayed in her pleasant memory, and above all she remembers the positive reaction she produced with it.
Ljiljana says it’s a strange feeling now that she knows she danced with the man who is the president of the United States today, but that it’s a confirmation that she’s doing the right job.
– I convey a kind of welcome and joy and it reaches out to people. I danced with the great Nikita Mikhalkov and it was one of my most beautiful and favorite waltzes. I danced with multiple world long jump champion Bob Beamon and the writer of the movie “The Postman Always Calls Twice” Bob Rafaelson. They are important people like Joseph Biden, says Ljiljana.
He points out that meetings in Skadarlija are always wonderful and well-intentioned, no matter which side of the world and on what occasion the visitors he receives arrive.
The same goes for Biden.
– I remember the moment with Biden as wonderful and it will remain in my biography that I danced with the president of America – Ljiljana says with a laugh.
