The announcement by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić that the next parliamentary elections will be in 2022, along with the presidential and Belgrade elections, sparked backlash from the opposition. While Vuk Jeremic believes that the opposition must reach the separation of the elections through dialogue, Zoran Lutovac calls for revolt.

The government to be formed is of limited duration, and the last parliamentary elections, along with the presidential ones, will be held on April 3, 2022, Vučić said after the last session of the SNS Presidency. This is not the first time that Vučić has mentioned merging the elections, so it cannot be said to be a huge surprise. The opposition, however, believes that separating the elections is a better option.

The president of the Popular Party, Vuk Jeremic, pointed out that the opposition in the dialogue must ask for the separation of the elections in 2022, so that both the presidential and parliamentary elections are not held at the same time.

– An even more important request would be the freedom of the media, mainly Serbian Radio-Television, as well as the reduction of space for abuses on televisions with national frequencies and the prevention of the misuse of state resources in the election campaign – said Jeremic.

He pointed out that the imperative of the European Union, whose role this time will be much more serious and decisive, will be not to repeat the opposition’s boycott of the elections, and that it is up to the opposition to contribute as much as possible to the process.

– It is up to us to take advantage of the situation and not jump on every bone thrown at us by the government leadership, not to be only reactive, so that the dialogue gives rise to different electoral conditions. By boycotting, we have shown that without opposition there is no legitimacy of the institutions. The government did not even manage to create the semblance of normality, and it cannot afford another election cycle without the opposition – Jeremic said.

The current president of the DS, Zoran Lutovac, is somewhat more radical.

“No, this time I am not in favor of a boycott. This time I am in favor of a rebellion. If the basic conditions for free and fair elections are not met, we will be left with civil resistance and rebellion. When their rights are usurped. basic rights and freedoms, rebellion is a legitimate means of resistance, “he wrote. Lutovac on Twitter.

The leader of Dveri, Boško Obradović, previously stated that the best for democracy is that the presidential, parliamentary and local elections are held separately.

– Of course, the government wants to repeat the undemocratic and unconstitutional elections as they were on June 21, but that is not realistic. Before the next elections, we need a transitional government of experts that provides the conditions for free and fair elections, and above all freedom of the media and the prevention of official campaigns and pressure on voters. The opposition should reach a common position on this and set conditions for the authorities. If these minimum conditions are not met, we are left with no choice but to embark on the path of civil disobedience and street protests, Obradović said.

Pavle Grbović, leader of the Free Citizens Movement, believes the intention is to try to “save the Belgrade government” by merging the elections, as well as to question the issue of the crisis of democracy and the upcoming negotiations on electoral conditions.

Milos Jovanovic, chairman of the Democratic Party of Serbia, assessed that by merging the elections, the government is a broader front and a weaker room for maneuver for the opposition, which would otherwise focus primarily on the Belgrade elections.

Klacar: extraordinary parliamentary elections are a real thing

Cesid CEO Bojan Klacar claims that everything in the previous four months was in the direction of snap elections, from President Vučić’s announcements to the political tactics of the SNS in the context of creating better chances for electoral success.

– It was clear that the snap elections are something quite real, and it is not clear, at least at the moment, what was the reason for announcing it now – says Klačar.

Since Vučić also announced the participation of minorities in the government, Klačar says that one can speak of a concentration government, stating that obviously the SNS’s strategy was to reward everyone who went to the polls in the next year and a half and share responsibilities with them. difficult decisions to make.
