Today, the Serbian Orthodox Church and its believers celebrate the Assumption of the Lord, the remembrance of the day the Mother of God first brought the newborn Christ to the temple to dedicate him to God.
The meeting of the Lord represents the first meeting of God and man under the vaults of the temple in Jerusalem and the meeting of the newborn Messiah when he received in his arms a righteous old man, known as Saint Simeon the God Bearer.
It is always celebrated on the fortieth day after Christmas and in a symbolic sense it is a very important Christian holiday, because it indicates the first encounter of the Savior with people.
The meeting has been held since the time of Emperor Justinian (544), and as a celebration it is very common among the Serbian people, who link their tradition and customs to this holiday.
One of the customs is that the candles must be lit at the Meeting of the Lord, because it is believed that the flame of a candle protects the house from thunder and other accidents, but also that it has magical power.
The most interesting of Sretenje’s beliefs is that young women should be careful today when they meet for the first time in the morning, because the groom will be like that in appearance and character.
