Today, the Serbian Orthodox Church and its believers celebrate one of the most important Christian holidays: the birth of the Blessed Mother of God, a holiday also called The Little Lady.

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated on the day the Blessed Virgin Mary was born in Nazareth, at the home of Joaquín and Ana. This day is one of the 36 major holidays on the church calendar marked with a red letter.

Customs and beliefs

There is a belief that nothing should be done in the Little Lady for work that is done by hand.

Apparently it’s not good to start any new business, but it should be put off for a few days to come.

Autumn weddings in Serbia, since ancient times, began with the Little Lady. In agriculture, Mala Gospojina marked the time when the plowing and sowing of winter crops began. At that time various livestock festivals were organized.

The herbs collected between Velika and Mala Gospojina are believed to have special healing properties, and the eggs from this period can remain fresh all year round, so they are left for planting; chickens born these days will make good laying hens. Many families celebrate the Little Lady as their Baptismal Glory.
