I don’t even know what to say because that verdict makes me ashamed that there is no advice in the world. Is a child’s life really worth 2.5 years in prison? – asks Marina Dimitrov, the mother of 10-year-old Aleksa, who died in June 2018 in Divčibare during recreational classes, when she was hit by a car by Vladimir Vukašinović (45) from Belgrade.
The Belgrade Court of Appeal announced on its website on Friday that it had upheld the verdict of the Valjevo High Court, which sentenced Vladimir Vukašinović (45) to two and a half years in prison for causing a traffic accident in Divčibare on 12 June 2018, in which 10-year-old Subotica student Aleksa Dimitrov suffered fatal injuries, while three of his friends from the department were slightly injured.
At the same time, Vukasinovic was banned from driving a category B motor vehicle for a year, and the injured parties were referred to litigation to fulfill their property and legal claims.
– And when I think about how much he struggled not to get even those two and a half years and to reduce that sentence, and the lies they used during the trial and what they did and what additional experience they asked for, I think it was a great disgrace and shame. The peak of inhumanity on her part and her lawyers, but also those who ruled – says the mother.
The mother of the dead child says she never wants to hurt anyone, but “God forbid someone to feel on their skin what their family felt.”
– There is nothing worse than this. There is nothing worse than a blow to bury a born child. I was always someone who feared the death of my parents and how I would survive, in the end I experienced something much worse than that. My son will not return anything! Even if he had been sentenced to 30 years in prison, my son would not have returned him, but two and a half years is a real shame. My son was full of life, he was an excellent student, he coached two sports and, above all, he had greatness in him. It just doesn’t exist anymore, and we never found out what really happened there – Marina Dimitrov, the mother of the child victim in Divčibare, told “Blic”.
The family never knew if the driver was looking back while driving or talking on the phone, if his son did not see him or was not expecting him since he was on the sidewalk …
– There are still many questions for which we have no answer. What we have felt and still feel, God forbid anyone. My son left me a monument so that I could visit it and that’s all I have of it. I kept and cared for it for nine and a half years and then someone came and took everything from me in an instant. I hope that the justice of God ends with all this, since there is no one else – concluded the mother.
A 10-year-old founder of Subotica, Aleksa Dimitrov, was killed when a column of children, students of the Subotica primary school “Milos Crnjanski”, crossing the street, was hit by a “Toyota Auris” car with Belgrade registration, driven by Vukasinovic.
At the moment when they were crossing the street in an organized way, when he had already crossed more than half of the column, a car suddenly appeared, whose driver apparently did not notice the greetings and signals that the recreationist gave him .
The unfortunate boy from Subotica was killed at the scene, while three of his friends were injured.
The statement published on the website of the Court of Appeals indicates that the court of first instance acted correctly and took into account all the circumstances that influence the correct choice of the criminal sanction and its duly measured amount, and that it gave adequate importance to all. That is, the court of first instance assessed, based on the defendant’s mitigating circumstances, that there was a significant contribution from the organizers of the recreational classes. The aggravating factors are the defendant’s previous life, and that in addition to the dead child, three other children were injured in this traffic accident.
