A prime minister, a minister, a deputy, a doctor, a director or a prime minister, a minister? Is the minister a minister or is it just her acquired title?
Much controversy emerged on social media after Minister for European Integration Jadranka Joksimović told United Valley-SDA Sandžak envoy Enis Imamović that she was not the minister’s wife, so he addressed her like Nušić’s character.
Imamovic spoke about the position of minorities in Serbia and Joksimovic addressed the “Ms Minister”, to which she reacted.
– You had a misogynistic performance with me because you called me “Mrs. Minister”. I am not the character of Nusic because I am not the wife of a minister, but I am a minister. Put that in your vocabulary – Joksimović told him.
That was enough to transfer the controversy of the assembly to social networks.
Like all change, it takes time for a phenomenon to establish itself in both official and public use, and now there is much controversy as to the form of certain functions in which women play a role.
Discussions, jokes, comments, followed, and opinions on all this were divided.
As the number of women in politics around the world increases over time, and there are now many more ministers, parliamentarians, prime ministers, chancellors, that has influenced the practice of using these names, and these are now names of standardized functions.
– The fact is that the minister used to refer to the minister’s wife, but over time the language has evolved, so now the minister is also used, especially for those who emphasize gender equality. This is how we use the correspondent, the prime minister, the president. It is not bad either, there has been an evolution and from the linguistic point of view there is no mistake, it depends on the individual how they should use – says by Kurir the professor of stylistics and rhetoric Dobrivoje Stanojevic.
Also, according to the territorial space of the Serbian language, many occupations have parallel forms such as teacher, boss, director, rector, surgeon.
In addition, in administrative use, some functions are already quite common, secretary, chief, president, while some are only in the initial stage of selection, such as bishop, sometimes bishop or firefighter, in addition to the more common form of female firefighter .
Therefore, there is not a sufficiently widespread knowledge about the connection between gender and language, nor is there awareness of what we do with language. At the center of the requirement for the use of gender-sensitive language is the need to make women more visible in public, assuming that such linguistic behavior can change patriarchal consciousness and perceptions of the inferior position of women in the world. society.
