Archaeologists have found this monumental building at the site of Dvorina, near Arandjelovac, in search of the remains of the home of the last Serbian despot, Pavle Bakić.
In that place a tesanik with remains of fresco paintings was found, so it was clear to the archaeologists that there was a church there.
– It is a medieval church that measures 27 meters long by 14 meters wide, decorated with paintings by the great masters, which makes it one of the largest of that time, but it is incredible that there is no written trace of it – he said the curator of the National Museum in Arandjelovac Vladan Milivojevic.
An endowment of such dimensions, he says, could only be real, so for now it is assumed that it belongs to the Nemanjić family and was built in the mid-14th century by Tsar Dušan at the time of his greatest prosperity.
Milivojević claimed that it was built in the Serbian-Byzantine style, but its existence is still shrouded in a veil of secrecy and, based on some remains found, this church is believed to have been the seat of the episcopate of Belgrade in the 14th century.
According to him, the church has a narthex that was built together with the ship that was painted, while the narthex was not.
– That is why it is assumed that something happened in the meantime, perhaps even the death of Tsar Dušan, which significantly changes the history, but also the future of this church. During the investigation, we found a large number of fresco fragments that are now in the museum, and the best and largest pieces have been preserved, says Milivojevic.

The monumental medieval church of Venčac, which archaeologists began exploring in 2016, was larger than Gračanica and was undoubtedly built by one of the more powerful Nemanjić. “The temple of Dvorine is the endowment of the ruler, without any doubt. It was 27 meters long and 14 meters wide, or larger than Gracanica. The church was built in the early or mid-14th century, because it was built in the style Serbian-Byzantine, which has been used since the time of King Milutin and lasts until the end of the Nemanjić dynasty. The founders could also be Stefan Dečanski and Dušan Silni, and further excavations will allow for more accurate dating. The greatest mystery of the great temple it is the reason why it was built so far in the north, near the troubled border with Hungary, “says historian and archaeologist Vladan Milivojević. This discovery refuted the theory that the Nemanjić had no endowments in Šumadija. Archaeologists began the investigation of the monumental medieval church l on Mount Venčac in 2016, and to this day they discovered that it was larger than the church of the Gračanica Monastery, and it is certainly a donation from one of the most powerful members of the Nemanjić dynasty. “The church in Dvorine, the royal endowment, without a doubt. He estimates that there are many unknowns that will be revealed by future research.
– Huge tombstones have been discovered testifying that the extremely wealthy population lived here during the Middle Ages, and it is up to us to find out who inhabited this area at that time – Milivojevic added.
