Exactly ten years ago, like a bolt of lightning from a cloudless sky, the news rang out that a sixteen-year-old girl, Milica Barašin, was brutally murdered on the outskirts of Subotica. A decade later, her executioner is still at large.
“Honestly, I gave up all hope that they would ever find him,” the girl’s mother, Svetlana Simendić, shrugged.
On the fateful October 7, Svetlana came home from work and waited at the door for her unit to return home. Although she was ill for a few days and did not go to school, Milica begged her grandmother to let her go see her friends. They all went home together and her friends accompanied her to a section of the road, and from there she headed alone to the Zorka settlement. She was wearing headphones in her ears and probably didn’t realize someone was following her, until an unknown man came up behind her and dragged her down the Sombor Railway. With a single blow, he slashed her neck and left her in a pool of blood.
“It’s like I’m waiting for her at the door now and I see the ambulance coming. And now I can feel that horror that happened to me when I walked towards them,” my mother still has vivid memories.
“I do not think that a normal person would cover up such a brutal murder of a child, people are not that evil, but the omissions were simply made during the investigation and investigation.
