The director of the World Health Organization in Serbia, Marijan Ivanuša, said today that the rate of deterioration of the epidemiological situation in Serbia is decreasing and that he hopes that we are approaching the peak of the epidemic, but noted that even after reaching the peak, the pressure on hospitals will continue. watch out.
“I am afraid we are not yet at the peak. However, the pressure on hospitals will continue for a few weeks after the peak, because the development of a severe form of the disease lasts from ten days to two weeks. I expect a difficult December, especially for healthcare workers, “Ivanusa said.
He said the epidemic in Serbia had spread like wildfire and that strict measures and a long time were needed to control it.
He states that the infection is spreading within families, in the workplace, and that large numbers of Serbs are expected to return to their homeland to visit their families during the holidays.
“It can represent an additional number of patients, we have to think both ways, ensure a safe visit and think about how the virus is spreading locally,” he told RTS.
He stated that other countries, when the number of new patients was as large as it is now in Serbia, closed restoration services and even introduced a curfew, but that it is difficult to say what would give the best results in Serbia.
Ivanuša pointed out that clinical medicine saves lives and that the capabilities of healthcare workers are not limitless.
He also noted that tests are very important and that those who test positive, if they do not have symptoms, should be isolated at home.
As stated, a person is contagious about two days before the onset of symptoms and the first five days of symptoms, in the most serious illness and for the longest time.
“That is why it is important to wear masks, to keep physical distance,” Ivanusa said, adding that she hopes that the corona virus vaccine will arrive as soon as possible and that more vaccines will arrive in Serbia and around the world.
