Today, the Serbian Orthodox Church celebrates the day of the Holy Great Martyr Catherine, a suffering Christian of great intelligence and education.
Saint Catherine the Great of Alexandria is one of the first martyr and Christian saint of the late 3rd century. According to tradition, in one of her visions, Jesus Christ gave her a ring, which she interpreted as a sign that she should dedicate her life to God. She was highly educated and knew Greek philosophy, medicine, rhetoric and logic very well.
According to tradition, Emperor Maxentius once invited 50 sages and organized a debate to discuss the faith. In that debate, Catherine won, and Emperor Maxentius ordered that the 50 sages be burned as punishment. Before his death, at the urging of Catherine, these sages accepted Christianity and went to confession.
Ekaterina was captured, tortured and executed at the age of 18, on November 24, 305. According to tradition, during the execution, milk instead of blood flowed from her body.
His relics are kept at Sinai. Saints Kings Dragutin and Milutin gave numerous gifts to the Monastery of Santa Catalina, which are kept in the museum and library of the monastery. At the end of the 14th century, the abbot of the Sinai monastery was a Serb, Joanikije.
According to Orthodox tradition, there is a belief that girls who want to meet the love of their life pray to this saint. It is necessary to pray every night for 40 days and the wish will be fulfilled.
