When colleagues came and said that the girl was trapped in the apartment, we did not think of ourselves at any time, but only of climbing and somehow rescuing her. Last night his father called me, thanked me for everything I had done. From what I hear, he is in surgery and I hope he calls me soon to tell me that he is okay.
With these words, the day after the horrible fire in Dorcol in which flames engulfed the apartment on the 10th floor of a high-rise building on Visokog Stevana Street, says Pavle Gavura, a Pancevo construction worker who saved 15 year old girl who was trapped in a burning apartment.
The Donji Dorcol skyscraper fire broke out around 1 p.m. yesterday, and was caused, according to unofficial information so far, by a celebratory candle that remained lit when the girl went to take a shower. Sensing the smoke coming from other rooms, he left the bathroom and found a terrifying scene: the fire was already swallowing the furniture …
He ran to the terrace and started asking for help …
– “I’m burning, I’m burning!” – echoed through the settlement. Fortunately, their screams were heard by workers at a nearby construction site and they immediately took action.
– When a colleague came to tell me that the apartment was on fire, they already had a rope with them and we immediately headed towards the building … At no point did I think of anything other than to climb the stairs and somehow save her. We went to his door and tried to get in or out, but we couldn’t, says Pavle, who is still at the same construction site today, the day after the film’s heroic feat and rescue operation.
There was no time to think, he had to react quickly and soberly. Then they came up with the idea of going down to a neighbor’s apartment under the fire.
– We arrived at the neighbor’s door and he didn’t have time to say anything, we had already entered and headed towards the terrace. He led us through the apartment and we went out onto the terrace. I looked up and saw that the girl was standing on the part of the terrace where the flames were and where the smoke was coming from. I yelled at her to come the other way, and luckily she was so sober she managed to hear me and hear me. The companions tied me with a rope and held me down as I climbed the railing; Pavle tells us about dramatic moments.
On the terrace, in addition to the well-coordinated team of builders, there were neighbors, apartment owners … They all looked at them with much anticipation and even more fear. The fact that the rescue operation is taking place on the 10th floor has also made the dire situation uncertain.
– Fortunately, she was sober enough. I told her to trust me, to cross over and let go, that I would catch her. She listened to me, and so it was. She crossed the other side of the fence and I greeted her. We go down to the terrace and cover ourselves with towels – remembers Pavle.
By then, emergency services had already arrived at the scene. They left the apartment, and in their place came those other heroes, in white coats, who immediately took care of the girl.
– I have no closer information on his condition, but as far as I know, he should have an operation today. I hope everything goes well and that soon he invites me to tell him that he is fine. I spoke with his father, he called me last night to thank me – says Pavle.
He revealed to us that he has been in this business for 16 years, that he, like his colleagues, is not afraid of cherries by the nature of his work, because, as he himself says, sometimes they spend the whole day meters above the ground. They are a small but well coordinated team.
How modest young people are is perhaps best illustrated by the phrase that Pavle, speaking of his injuries, suddenly uttered, putting himself, his colleagues and his heroic act on the back burner: “Well, I’m sorry I didn’t get there sooner. “.
– I feel good today, much better than yesterday. I’m glad she was still alive, that’s the most important thing. I have never had a similar experience. We have a small business and have been in this business for years. Even today people talk at the construction site about how happy we were to be there, but we didn’t get there sooner; Pavle tells us shyly, not wanting to make a lot of noise with their actions because he thinks what they did is completely natural.
