With these words, Bojan Sudjic, his colleague from the Academy, said goodbye to Isidora Zebeljan today at the New Cemetery.
He remembered how he and Isidora were expelled from music theory class because, above all, they finished the dictation, as he says, out of time.
“I’m glad we turned friendship into cooperation,” he said.
Isidora’s husband, Borislav Čičovački, also gave a speech at the funeral. He found the strength to say a few words and added at the end:
“I can’t wait to hug you when we meet again.”
After his speech, four women stood in front of the coffin and sang while Sudjic was with them. When the music stopped, Isidora was buried.
The last greeting to one of the most important Serbian composers was attended by SANU President Vladimir S. Kostić, politician Zoran Lutovac, actor Tihomir Stanić, Kokan Mladenović, Svetozar Cvetković and writer Ljubivoje Ršumović.
Several hundred people said goodbye for the last time to Isidora, who was buried at 12 o’clock in the New Cemetery in Belgrade.
Isidora Zebeljan passed away after a long illness.
Zebeljan was born in Belgrade in 1967. He has received important recognitions for his work in the country and abroad, including the Mokranjac Prize. She was elected a member of SANU in 2006 and a member of the World Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2012. Her music has been performed in Great Britain, Italy, Holland, Austria, France, the United States …
The Berlin magazine “Der Freitag” chose Isidora Zebeljan as one of the ten most promising public figures in the world for 2009. As the first public figure of the Balkans in 2014, he received the award of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean countries, for achievements in the field of culture and art. Isidora Zebeljan is also one of the most prominent Serbian composers of music for theater and cinema. He has composed music for more than 30 theater performances in Serbia, Norway, Croatia and Montenegro. He received the Sterija Award three times for his work in this field.
After the success of the opera “Dawn D.” Isidora Žebeljan received commissions from important institutions and festivals, such as the Venice Biennale (St. Mark’s Horses, 2004), the Bregenz Festival (Opera Marathoners, 2008; Zujte strune, for symphony orchestra, 2013), the Genesis Foundation in London. , for the opening of the Bill Viola exhibition at the National Gallery in London, 2003), University of Kent (Breakdown Quartet, 2009), Gelsenkirchen Opera (Simon the Chosen, 2009 and Nahod Simon, 2015), Berlin Philharmonic Foundation, Wedge Soup, 2014) …
He has composed for: Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Boat Quartet, Berlin Philharmonic Octet, Dutch Chamber Choir, London Bras … His compositions are performed at festivals in Turin, Siena, Gothenburg, Wroclaw, Oslo, Jerusalem, Barcelona, Milan, and his works are performed by the Belgrade Philharmonic, St. Martin in the Fields Academy, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, RAI Turin Symphony Orchestra, Royal Galician Philharmonic, New Westphalia Philharmonic, Lutoslav Quartet, Sentijeri Selvaji Ensemble from Milan.
