A species of bird strictly protected in our country, a young golden eagle, was killed in Uvac a few days ago, and was found on Saturday, August 29, with a gunshot wound to the back. Despite all the efforts of SRP “Uvac” authorities to save the cruel eagle, he died on the way to the Belgrade Zoo, where he was supposed to be operated on.
As the director of SRP “Uvac”, Miljka Dučić told “Blic”, “it is doubtful that anyone could have done it by accident.”
– The bird was found injured on August 29, after which it was treated at the facility for injured and injured birds, where it was examined by a veterinarian. She said that she should be transferred to the Belgrade Zoo and that her leg was most likely amputated, because the bone was completely crushed. However, on the way there, the eagle perished, unfortunately – said the director Dučić.
A vet’s examination also determined that the bird was injured a few days before it was found.
Someone deliberately shot an eagle
With the director’s suspicion that this was done intentionally, the Society for the Protection and Study of Birds of Serbia agreed.
– An individual of a raw young eagle, as determined by the veterinarian, was shot by a hunting firearm, because a shot was used in the bird’s wound, which is used precisely for this weapon. No one is supposed to be able to mix this type of protected bird with another game species, the intention was that someone would shoot it, Slobodan Knezevic of the Society for the Protection and Study of Birds of Serbia told “Blic”.
By the way, in the entire area of the Uvac nature reserve, this year only three nests of pairs of this species of eagles were observed, while there are 60 (pairs) of them throughout the territory of Serbia.
Such a case has not been recorded in Uvac, since 2016, when a griffon vulture was killed in the Manastirina feeding area.
The perpetrator was never discovered and the case became obsolete after three years.
Regarding the new murder of the bald eagle, a complaint was filed with the competent Prosecutor’s Office against unidentified persons for the slaughter of a strictly protected species.
