– Our younger brother often asks where dad is. We did not reply. We didn’t tell him. He only knows that Dad had an accident and is in the hospital. We don’t know how to tell him that because he was very attached to his dad, says Gabriela, the daughter of Dejan Ilić (48), who died on January 4 on Medijana Boulevard in Niš when he and Andrej P. (12) died while in the sidewalk. Nemanja S. (19) from Belgrade collided with a car.
The children of the tragically injured Nishlija believe that the penalties for arrogant drivers who knowingly endanger other citizens by driving should be stricter.
– This is definitely a premeditated murder. Visited several times, circled at high speed, tenants saw, and there are witnesses. It is tragic that it also destroyed her life, but it also destroyed two families. But he will live and these people will not be able to return. Eight years is the maximum penalty prescribed by law for this crime. I am not an expert, but in my opinion, this is a kind of murder because he knowingly endangered the lives of citizens by driving like that, at that enormous speed, much higher than allowed. The proper law clearly is not. Eight years of maximum penalty and two lives were taken. A child lost his life and the father of three children; no punishment will make up for that loss. Even if the law is changed, you cannot contribute to us, because the procedure will be carried out in accordance with the regulations in force, but it can prevent some future tragedies, which unfortunately will surely happen again – says Gabriela Ilić, the daughter of the late Dejan .
She says that serious accidents happen too often and that the culprits often get through with mild punishments.
– Unfortunately, this happens too often. I posted the status on Facebook and after that a lot of people with similar cases showed up. Unfortunately, the cases have not been publicly covered by the media and people do not know anything about it. These drivers usually pass with a minimal penalty or go unpunished – says Gabriela.
His brother Antonio agrees that the regulations must be changed and penalties for arrogant drivers tightened, but also that all possibilities must be limited so that young and inexperienced drivers have the opportunity to drive such powerful and fast cars.
– I think the punishment should be harsher. These cars should not be given to young drivers, teenagers, because they are still children, they do not think for themselves and these cars only incentivize more gasoline. The car is also bulky, weighing two tons, you don’t feel like driving fast until you lose control at the last moment. For a young driver, this combination can prove fatal. I also believe that fines are not at all suitable for serious traffic offenses. The sentences are for a couple of years, and that happens all the time, constantly, like the wild west, it’s not safe anywhere. We have no sidewalks here in the settlement, and they drive very fast down our street, there is a traffic accident for a month. My father and I pulled a girl out of a wrecked car last year, who was also a novice driver, crashed into a hill. Something must be done citywide to increase road safety, Antonio believes.
Gabriela adds that the parents themselves are to blame for the serious consequences of the accident, if they buy a car that is too powerful and fast for a child who has just received a permit.
– Parents are to blame because they allowed a child, who may not even realize what he did, to drive that vehicle. I heard that four years ago there was an initiative to change the law, why haven’t I changed it until now, I don’t know. Why does a tragic situation always have to happen first for the law to change? – Gabriela wonders.
The accident in which Ilić and Andrej P. / 12) died occurred on January 4 at around 8:40 p.m. on Mediana Boulevard, on the sidewalk.
Apparently Stamenković lost control of the vehicle due to fast driving and crashed into the seafront at high speed. Due to the force of the blow, the boy was moved over the two-meter high fence of “Vodovod”, where he died on the spot, while Ilic was thrown several tens of meters and died after an hour in the hospital .
Stamenkovic was arrested after the accident and ordered to be detained for a month.
At the first prosecution hearing, he defended himself by keeping silent. Two minors who were in the car with him were also questioned. Police said that although he is 19, the suspect has a regular driver’s license, which he obtained in accordance with the law, as well as all those who completed the educational profile in high school, a motor vehicle driver and passed driving test. They are issued a probationary driver’s license for one year.
